# Maldives vs Bora Bora: an Honest *Head-to-Head*

The two most romanticised overwater-bungalow destinations on Earth win on different things. One owns the scenery; the other owns the marine life, the choice and the access. Here's how to decide.

MALDIVES vs BORA BORA · By [Tym Lewtak](https://luxatolls.com/about/) · 2 August 2026 · 3 min read

*Bora Bora's Mount Otemanu over the lagoon — the one thing the flat Maldives can't put behind your overwater villa.*

These are the two destinations the phrase "overwater bungalow" was invented for, and travellers agonise between them for good reason. They are both expensive, both ravishing, and both sell the same fantasy of a villa on stilts over impossibly blue water. But they are built from different rock and win on genuinely different things — so the honest answer isn't which is better, it's which is better *for you*.

Bora Bora is one small island wrapped in a single Technicolor lagoon and crowned by the volcanic peak of Mount Otemanu, which rises 727 metres straight out of the water. The Maldives is the opposite: some 1,190 flat coral islands scattered across 26 atolls, with nothing rising more than a few metres above the sea. One is vertical drama; the other is horizontal serenity.

## Where Bora Bora wins

Scenery, hands down. Bora Bora invented the overwater bungalow in the 1960s, and its version is still the more cinematic one — every villa faces that green volcanic peak, a backdrop the flat Maldives simply cannot replicate. As a single inhabited high island, it also offers more to do on land: 4x4 volcano safaris, ancient Polynesian temples, WWII relics, the town of Vaitape, Tahitian culture, and the lovely Matira Beach. If the trip is a once-in-a-lifetime honeymoon built around one iconic photograph, Bora Bora delivers it. And for travellers from the US West Coast, it's relatively reachable — around eight hours to Tahiti.

## Where the Maldives wins

Almost everything else. On **choice** it isn't close: Bora Bora has perhaps nine or ten overwater resorts and a few hundred bungalows total; the Maldives has 180-plus resorts, more than a hundred with water villas, and an estimated three thousand-plus overwater bungalows — roughly two-thirds of the world's supply — at every price from about $400 to $4,000 a night, plus genuine budget guesthouses. Bora Bora has no real budget tier: an overwater bungalow there runs roughly $800 to $1,500-plus a night, with premium pool villas climbing well past that — so on **value and range** the Maldives wins comfortably too. On **marine life** it's a rout: Hanifaru Bay's hundred-strong manta swarms and South Ari's year-round whale sharks put the Maldives among the best dive destinations on the planet, where Bora Bora's calm lagoon offers lovely but more limited snorkelling. The Maldives wins on **beaches** too — softer, whiter coral sand — and on **access** for most of the world: it's a direct flight of about ten hours from London and just over four from Dubai, versus Bora Bora's obligatory two flights via Tahiti.

> Bora Bora owns the scenery and the romance of place; the Maldives owns the marine life, the beaches, the choice, the value and the reach.

## So which should you book?

Choose **Bora Bora** if dramatic mountain-and-lagoon scenery is the entire point, you want one bucket-list honeymoon and the iconic peak in every photo, you value land-based culture and adventure, and you're travelling from the Americas. Choose the **Maldives** if you're a diver or snorkeller, you want the softest beaches and the widest spread of resorts and budgets, and you're coming from Europe, the Gulf or Asia. One nuance worth knowing: the two peak at nearly opposite times of year — Bora Bora is best May to October, the Maldives December to April — so you can't easily pair them. Neither is the "right" answer. They're just two different dreams.

One honest caveat before you book the Maldives: budget for the transfer. Because every resort sits on its own island, getting from the airport to your villa means a compulsory speedboat or seaplane — typically a few hundred dollars per person each way, billed separately from the room and one of the bigger surprises on a final invoice. The seaplane is itself part of the romance, but it is not optional. And once you're on a private island you eat every meal at resort prices, usually on a paid meal plan, with nowhere else to go — so the all-in cost can run well above the nightly rate. Bora Bora's resorts sit closer to its one airport and town, which softens that particular sting.

If the Maldives wins your vote, our [Maldives honeymoon guide](https://luxatolls.com/honeymoon/) ranks the most romantic islands — overwater villas, private pools, dine-around dining and the resorts that get the details right.
