The only restaurant on the island — Ara Iru (Rising Sun) serves daily international buffets with rotating theme nights including Maldivian Night and beach barbecues. Led by Executive Chef Hassan Manik, expect tropical fruit spreads at breakfast and freshly grilled seafood at dinner.

Dining Inclusions

Makunudu includes full board as standard — three meals daily at Ara Iru. The all-inclusive upgrade adds unlimited drinks at both bars, which most guests find worthwhile given there's nowhere else to spend money on the island.

Your Days on the Island

Makunudu doesn't try to be an activity resort — the island is small enough to walk in 10 minutes. What it does well is water-based: an excellent PADI dive centre, a strong house reef, and a handful of excursions that let you explore the surrounding atoll. On land, it's volleyball, badminton, and a good book.

House Reef & Underwater

Makunudu's house reef is a consistent highlight — colourful coral formations surround the island with walk-in access from the beach. The reef took a hit during the 2016 El Niño bleaching event, but active coral restoration (420+ fragments in five nurseries) has helped recovery. Divers and snorkelers regularly spot reef sharks, turtles, and moray eels. The nearby North Malé dive sites — Manta Point, Shark Point, Blue Canyon — are among the best in the central atolls.

Transfer from Malé

Makunudu is one of the closest resort islands to Malé — a straightforward 50-minute speedboat through the North Malé Atoll. No seaplane logistics, no domestic flights, no daylight restrictions. Late arrivals are fine, making it one of the simplest transfers in the Maldives.

Who This Resort is For

Makunudu is not for everyone — and that's the point. This is the Maldives stripped back to what matters: a tiny island with a great reef, warm staff who know your name by lunch, and zero pressure to do anything beyond snorkel, eat, and read. The bungalows are small and rustic, there's no pool, and dining is a single buffet. But at $220 a night with a 50-minute speedboat transfer, it's one of the most accessible and affordable ways to experience the real Maldives — and the 40% repeat visitor rate says everything.
