Getting to the Maldives from the United States
All international flights to the Maldives land at Velana International Airport (MLE) on Hulhule Island, just across a bridge from the capital Male. Whether you are searching for flights from NYC to Maldives, SFO to Maldives, or any other US city, every route requires at least one connection through a Gulf hub (Dubai, Doha, Abu Dhabi) or an Asian hub (Singapore, Hong Kong, Seoul).
US citizens receive a free 30-day visa on arrival. You need a passport valid for at least 1 month, a confirmed hotel booking, and a return or onward ticket. No advance visa application is needed.

Pro tip: From Los Angeles the quickest one-stops run through Europe and Istanbul rather than across the Pacific: SWISS or Edelweiss via Zurich and Turkish via Istanbul take around 23.5 to 24 hours and land in Malé in the morning. Set Google Flights alerts to catch fare drops.
Chicago (ORD) to Maldives
Pro tip: From Chicago the sensible one-stops take around 22 to 24 hours; Emirates via Dubai and Turkish via Istanbul both land in Malé early in the morning, well inside the seaplane window. Etihad via Abu Dhabi often has the lowest fares, but check the layover length.
Dallas–Fort Worth (DFW) to Maldives
Pro tip: Qatar flies nonstop DFW–DOH, making it the cleanest single-stop routing to Male. Combine with American Airlines award miles at 70,000 miles one-way for business class on the DFW–DOH leg.
Houston (IAH) to Maldives
Pro tip: Turkish via Istanbul is the cleanest one-stop from Houston at around 23.5 hours, landing in Malé early in the morning. Emirates via Dubai takes about an hour longer. Routings via London usually mean two stops, because British Airways flies to Malé only a few days a week.
Boston (BOS) to Maldives

Miami (MIA) to Maldives
Pro tip: Emirates flies nonstop from Miami to Dubai and is the quickest one-stop at around 21 hours, landing in Malé early in the morning. Turkish via Istanbul is the usual alternative. Fares from Miami are highest in June and lowest around April.
Seattle (SEA) to Maldives
Pro tip: Turkish via Istanbul is the most efficient routing at around 22.5 hours. Korean Air via Seoul is another solid option. Consider positioning to SFO or LAX for better pricing if your schedule allows flexibility.
Flying to the Maldives from India
From India the Maldives is a short-haul trip: about an hour and a half from Kochi, under two hours from Bengaluru, around four from Delhi — and Malé runs just thirty minutes behind IST. Nonstop service is narrower than search pages suggest, so here is where it actually exists.

The cheapest fares from most Indian cities are often one-stop rather than nonstop — usually SriLankan via Colombo, which adds little distance. Return economy from the southern gateways typically runs ₹20,000–₹35,000, and from Delhi ₹30,000–₹48,000; fares are lowest in November and highest in July and August (Google Flights observed ranges, September 2026).
Short flights help with the last leg. Seaplanes fly in daylight only, and most flights from southern India land in the middle of the day, comfortably in time for a same-day seaplane. Arriving late in the evening? Pick a resort reached by speedboat from the airport, or plan a night in Malé.
For resorts in the far north, Maldivian has also flown from Thiruvananthapuram and Bengaluru to Hanimaadhoo in Haa Dhaalu Atoll, which skips Malé altogether — check current schedules before you plan around it.

Velana is a small airport on its own island. The process from landing to resort transfer is straightforward but involves several steps.

Every Maldives resort arranges your transfer from Velana Airport. The type depends on how far the resort is from Male. Transfer costs are per person, return trip, and are separate from your room rate.

Best for: North and South Male Atoll resorts. Fastest option for nearby islands. Operates regardless of time of arrival.
Duration: 30 min to 90 min
Operates: Daylight only, 6:00 AM–4:00 PM
Best for: Mid-range atolls (Ari, Baa, Noonu, Lhaviyani). Scenic flight over the atolls. 25 kg luggage limit.
Duration: 1–3 hours total
Operates: Scheduled domestic flights, then speedboat
Best for: Remote southern atolls (Gaafu, Addu, Laamu). Longer range than seaplanes. Evening arrivals possible.
Booking Tips for the Best Fares
Peak season flights (December–March) sell out fast. Booking 3–4 months in advance typically yields the best fares. For shoulder season travel, 6–8 weeks ahead is sufficient to find competitive rates.
American Airlines miles book Qatar and Etihad business class at 70,000 miles one-way. Transfer Amex Membership Rewards to British Airways Avios for 66,000 miles one-way in business on Qatar. May and October–November offer 20–40% lower airfares than December–March peak season. Weather is still good with occasional brief showers. Resort rates also drop significantly, compounding your savings.
Create price alerts for your route on Google Flights. Fares fluctuate daily and flash sales from Emirates, Qatar, and Turkish happen regularly. Being flexible on departure by a day or two can save $200–400 per ticket.
Emirates and Qatar both offer free or discounted stopover hotel packages in Dubai and Doha. A 1–2 night stop breaks up the journey and adds another destination. You arrive at your resort refreshed instead of jet-lagged.
Booking separate tickets for each leg (US to hub, hub to Male) can save 20–30% vs. a single through-ticket. Pair a cheap domestic or transatlantic fare with an inexpensive hub-to-Male segment. Leave a 4+ hour buffer between flights to protect against delays since the tickets are separate.
Seaplanes only operate from 6:00 AM to 4:00 PM. If your resort uses a seaplane transfer, your international flight needs to land before 2:00 PM to clear immigration and make the last departure. Late arrivals require an overnight in Male. Seaplanes also limit luggage to 25 kg checked plus 5 kg carry-on per person.
Speedboat resorts are more flexible with 24-hour transfers available. For domestic flight connections, evening arrivals are possible. Plan your international routing so you arrive with enough buffer for your transfer type.
