Anantara Resorts in the Maldives

Anantara — part of Thailand's Minor Hotels — runs three sister resorts in the Maldives, the most of any boutique luxury operator. Kihavah is the Baa Atoll flagship with an underwater restaurant; Dhigu and Veli sit side-by-side in South Malé and share guest privileges across both islands.

Anantara's Maldives Roster

Anantara runs three Maldives resorts under Minor Hotels — more than any other boutique-luxury operator in the country. Kihavah is the Baa Atoll flagship, reached by seaplane, with the SEA underwater restaurant and the only over-water observatory in the Maldives. Dhigu and Veli are the South Malé pair, a 30-minute speedboat from the airport: family-focused Dhigu and adults-only Veli, sharing one lagoon and a dine-around across both islands. One brand, three genuinely different trips — split by atoll, transfer, and who the island is built for. Entry rates run from $600 to $736/night.

Meal plans & all-inclusive

Anantara Kihavah BB / HB No AI plan
Anantara Dhigu BB / HB / FB / AI All-inclusive available
Anantara Veli BB / HB / FB / AI All-inclusive available

The one to know: Dhigu and Veli both offer plans up to all-inclusive, and AI guests share a dine-around across the South Malé islands. Kihavah has no all-inclusive option — it's bed-and-breakfast or half-board only, so its restaurants (including the underwater SEA) are paid à la carte.

Dining Across the Three

Kihavah is the dining destination — its SEA.FIRE.SPICE.SKY. landmark stacks an underwater restaurant, a teppanyaki grill, a pan-Asian room and a rooftop observatory-bar in one over-and-under-water complex. The South Malé pair instead share a dine-around: book Dhigu or Veli and the restaurants on both islands are open to you.

Anantara Kihavah Baa Atoll

The most theatrical dining island in the Maldives — one over-water landmark stacks an underwater restaurant, a Nikkei teppanyaki grill and the country's only over-water observatory-bar (SEA.FIRE.SPICE.SKY.).

SEA is the underwater restaurant and wine cellar (à la carte; adults-only at dinner except the Monday family night). SKY doubles as the only over-water observatory in the Maldives, with a resident "Sky Guru" astronomer. Kihavah is bed-and-breakfast or half-board only — no all-inclusive.

Anantara Dhigu & Veli South Malé · shared dine-around

One half-board dine-around links family-island Dhigu, adults-only Veli and private Naladhu — Thai on stilts, teppanyaki and an over-water grill, all walkable across the lagoon.

Guests of Dhigu and Veli cross freely between the two islands (and Naladhu guests can join), so a single stay opens roughly ten restaurants and bars — Cumin (Indian) and more beyond those above. All-inclusive plans cover the whole dine-around.

Getting to Each Resort

All three start at Velana International Airport (Malé). The South Malé pair are a quick speedboat with no time-of-day limit; Kihavah is a scenic seaplane to Baa Atoll, which flies in daylight only — the single biggest logistics point to plan around. Transfer fares are charged on top of the room rate.

ResortTransferDurationRound trip / personNotes
Anantara Kihavah Seaplane ~35 min ~$850 Daylight hours only (last arrival ~3:30pm); a domestic flight to Dharavandhoo + speedboat covers late arrivals.
Anantara Dhigu Speedboat ~30 min ~$354 Runs around the clock — no daylight restriction.
Anantara Veli Speedboat ~35 min ~$265 Runs around the clock — no daylight restriction.

Plan the seaplane around daylight: if your international flight lands after ~3:30pm, Kihavah is reached the next morning — or the same evening via a short domestic flight to Dharavandhoo plus a speedboat. The South Malé speedboats run around the clock, so late arrivals are no problem at Dhigu or Veli.

The South Malé Trio: Dhigu, Veli & Naladhu

Two of Anantara's three Maldives resorts — Dhigu and Veli — share a single South Malé lagoon with a third Anantara-managed island, Naladhu Private Island. They run under one complex management, so the right move is often to pick the island that fits your trip and borrow the others' restaurants.

Family

Anantara Dhigu

The largest of the three and the family anchor — kids' club, family pool villas, watersports hub, and a shallow lagoon. Full meal plans up to all-inclusive.

Adults-Only

Anantara Veli

The 18+ island, a walkway from Dhigu — overwater-led villas, Ayurvedic wellness, and a Tropicsurf break. Quiet, with Dhigu's extra dining on tap.

Ultra-Private

Naladhu Private Island

The 20-house ultra-luxe island, its own brand rather than Anantara-flagged. Read the Naladhu review →

The access rules are worth knowing before you book. Dhigu and Veli guests cross freely between those two islands — a short walkway and dhoni link them, and the restaurants and bars on both are fair game, so couples on adults-only Veli still get Dhigu's variety and families on Dhigu can slip over for a grown-up dinner. Naladhu guests can visit Dhigu and Veli too, but it doesn't run the other way — Dhigu and Veli guests can't access the ultra-private Naladhu. Two shared speedboats run from the airport: one dedicated to Naladhu, one serving Dhigu and Veli. Kihavah, by contrast, sits alone up in Baa Atoll and is reached by seaplane — it's not part of this complex.

How to Book Anantara — GHA Discovery

Anantara is a Minor Hotels brand, so its Maldives resorts sit inside GHA Discovery, the loyalty programme of the Global Hotel Alliance — the same programme that covers Avani, NH, Tivoli, Pan Pacific, Kempinski and the rest of the alliance. It works nothing like Bonvoy or Hilton Honors: there are no award nights and no points-to-night charts.

The currency is Discovery Dollars (D$), a fixed-value rebate where D$1 = US$1. You earn a percentage of eligible spend back as D$ and redeem it like cash against a future stay. The earn rate rises with tier — roughly 4% at entry level up to about 7% at the top — and it's all free to join.

The four GHA Discovery tiers
Silver
Free to join · member rates · ~4% back
Gold
~5% back
Platinum
Room upgrades
Titanium
11am check-in · 4pm checkout · ~7% back

The most useful recent change for Anantara specifically: from 7 January 2026, top-tier Titanium members get complimentary breakfast at all Anantara properties — Anantara had previously been excluded from that benefit. That matters in the Maldives, where Kihavah's standard rate is often room-only or bed-and-breakfast and breakfast-for-two carries real value.

Travel-advisor channels stack on top of GHA Discovery for cash bookings. Anantara Kihavah is bookable through Virtuoso, with the usual luxury inclusions: a room upgrade subject to availability, daily breakfast, a US$100 resort credit, early check-in / late check-out, complimentary Wi-Fi, and — on stays of three nights or more — a complimentary 50-minute massage for two. Anantara properties also appear in American Express's luxury hotel programmes (Anantara Dhigu has featured in The Hotel Collection), though the specific programme assignment varies by property and season, so confirm at the time of booking.

One thing not to confuse: GHA Discovery is the loyalty programme. Anantara Vacation Club is a separate vacation-ownership product — useful to some repeat guests, but it is not a points-earning loyalty scheme and doesn't help on a one-off Maldives stay.

Which Anantara Maldives Is Best For You?

There's no single "best" Anantara — the three target different trips, atolls, and budgets. Here's the angle-by-angle call:

Best for first-time Anantara Anantara Kihavah Maldives Villas The Baa Atoll flagship — 80 pool villas, the SEA underwater restaurant, the SKY overwater observatory, and a top-tier house reef (the "Golden Wall"). The canonical Anantara Maldives stay, and the only one of the three reached by seaplane.
Best for families Anantara Dhigu Maldives The family half of the South Malé trio — the Dhoni Kids' Club, family pool villas, a shallow lagoon, and a 30-minute speedboat that beats a seaplane with young kids in tow. Meal plans run up to all-inclusive, and a walkway links you to Veli's extra restaurants.
Best adults-only romance Anantara Veli Maldives The 18+ island — 67 predominantly overwater villas, Balance Wellness by Anantara (Ayurvedic), a Tropicsurf school on a real surf break, and Nirvana yacht sunset cruises. A walkway links it to Dhigu for extra dining — Veli's own restaurants do host Dhigu families, but its villas, beaches and pool stay strictly 18+.
Best for manta rays & reef Anantara Kihavah Maldives Villas Inside the Baa Atoll UNESCO Biosphere Reserve beside Hanifaru Bay — manta and whale-shark season runs May to November, with a resident marine biologist and the HARP coral programme. The South Malé pair run dolphin and turtle snorkelling, but Baa is the marine headline.
Best easy access (no seaplane) Anantara Dhigu Maldives Both South Malé islands are a ~30–35-minute speedboat from the airport (Dhigu ~30, Veli ~35) — no seaplane wait, no weather hold, no extra night either side, and transfers run around the clock. Kihavah is a daylight-only seaplane hop north to Baa. For wheels-down to welcome-drink in under two hours, choose Dhigu or Veli.
Best value entry Anantara Veli Maldives Veli opens at $600/night — the lowest entry of the three, with the cheapest transfer too (a speedboat, not a seaplane). Adults-only positioning and overwater-led villas make it the strongest value-romance pick in the Anantara set.

Common Questions

How many Anantara resorts are in the Maldives?
Three Anantara-branded resorts: Anantara Kihavah (Baa Atoll — the seaplane-access flagship with the SEA underwater restaurant and SKY observatory), Anantara Dhigu (South Malé, the family island), and Anantara Veli (South Malé, adults-only). Dhigu and Veli share a lagoon with a fourth island, Naladhu Private Island — also Anantara-managed, but it flies its own brand rather than the Anantara flag, so it isn't counted among the three Anantara resorts here.
Do Anantara resorts earn loyalty points? What is GHA Discovery?
Anantara is a Minor Hotels brand, so its Maldives resorts participate in GHA Discovery — the loyalty programme of the Global Hotel Alliance (which Minor co-owns, alongside brands like Avani, NH, Tivoli, Pan Pacific and Kempinski). It is not a points-and-award-nights programme like Bonvoy or Honors. The currency is Discovery Dollars (D$), a fixed-value rebate where D$1 = US$1: you earn a percentage of eligible spend back as D$ (roughly 4% at entry Silver up to ~7% at Titanium) and redeem it like cash on a future stay. Tiers run Silver → Gold → Platinum → Titanium, with upgrades, 11am check-in and 4pm late checkout at the top. Note GHA Discovery is separate from Anantara Vacation Club, which is a vacation-ownership product, not a loyalty scheme.
Can you visit between Anantara Dhigu and Anantara Veli?
Yes. Dhigu and Veli sit on the same South Malé lagoon and are linked by a short walkway / dhoni hop, and guests of either island can cross freely to use the restaurants and bars on both — a genuine dine-around across the two. Veli keeps its adults-only atmosphere on its own island; Dhigu hosts families. The third island on the lagoon, Naladhu Private Island, works the other way: Naladhu guests can visit Dhigu and Veli, but Dhigu and Veli guests can't access the ultra-private Naladhu.
Which Anantara Maldives is best for families?
Anantara Dhigu. It's the family island of the South Malé trio — the Dhoni Kids' Club, family pool villas, a shallow swimming lagoon, and a 30-minute speedboat that's far easier than a seaplane with young children. Meal plans go up to all-inclusive, and the walkway to Veli adds more dining. Anantara Veli is adults-only (18+) and Anantara Kihavah, while it has a kids' club, is a remote seaplane-access flagship better suited to couples and divers. See our family-vacation guide for cross-brand options.
Which Anantara Maldives has the underwater restaurant?
Anantara Kihavah, in Baa Atoll. Its signature SEA.FIRE.SPICE.SKY. complex stacks four venues in one over-and-under-water landmark: SEA, the underwater restaurant and wine cellar (often billed as the world's only underwater caviar restaurant); FIRE, a Peruvian-Japanese teppanyaki grill; SPICE, Asian; and SKY, a rooftop bar that doubles as the only over-water observatory in the Maldives, with a resident astronomer (the "Sky Guru"). Neither South Malé island has an underwater restaurant.
Which Anantara Maldives resorts are adults-only?
Only Anantara Veli is fully adults-only — 18+ across the whole island, aimed at couples and honeymooners. Anantara Dhigu and Anantara Kihavah are both family-friendly, each with a kids' club. The usual confusion is Kihavah: its underwater restaurant SEA serves an adults-only dinner (children are welcome at lunch and on the Monday family night), which leads some to assume the island is 18+ — it isn't.
Which Anantara Maldives is the cheapest?
Anantara Veli Maldives is the entry point at $600/night — South Malé Atoll, Speedboat transfer, which keeps the trip cost down versus a seaplane property. Adults-only overwater retreat with Tropicsurf, Thai dining, and a surf break. See the full review for the honest trade-offs.
Is Anantara Maldives all-inclusive?
It depends which island. Anantara Dhigu and Anantara Veli both offer plans up to all-inclusive — and because the two islands (plus Naladhu) share a dine-around, AI guests can eat across roughly ten restaurants and bars, with à-la-carte credits at the premium venues and a free-flow beverage package. Anantara Kihavah does not have an all-inclusive plan — it's bed-and-breakfast or half-board only, so dining at SEA, FIRE and the rest is paid à la carte. If an all-inclusive Maldives stay is the priority, choose Dhigu or Veli; see the meal-plan section above and our all-inclusive guide.
Which Anantara Maldives resorts need a seaplane?
Only Anantara Kihavah — it's in Baa Atoll, a ~35-minute seaplane from Malé that flies in daylight only (a late international arrival means an overnight near Malé, or a domestic flight to Dharavandhoo plus a speedboat). Dhigu and Veli skip the seaplane entirely — both are a 30–35-minute speedboat from the airport, running around the clock. The Getting There section above has the full cost-and-time comparison.
Which Anantara Maldives resort is the best?
There's no single best — it depends on the trip. Kihavah is the flagship for couples, divers and special occasions (underwater restaurant, observatory, Baa Atoll manta reef). Dhigu is the family pick (kids' club, family villas, easy speedboat). Veli is the adults-only romance-and-value choice. The decision matrix above breaks it down angle by angle.
Which Anantara Maldives resort is best for manta rays?
Anantara Kihavah, by a distance — it sits in the Baa Atoll UNESCO Biosphere Reserve beside Hanifaru Bay, where manta rays and whale sharks gather to feed roughly May to November (Kihavah runs guided trips with a resident marine biologist). The South Malé pair, Dhigu and Veli, offer dolphin and turtle snorkelling but aren't manta destinations. See our best-time-to-visit guide for the seasonal detail.
