On the Break or Boat Access?

Maldives waves break on the outer edges of reefs and at the channels between islands, so where your resort sits decides how you surf. A handful of islands have a named wave breaking off their own reef, and you walk or paddle out when the tide and wind line up. Everywhere else, the resort’s surf partner runs boats to the surrounding breaks on a schedule.

Being on the break rarely means an open line-up. The resorts that own the famous waves protect them: surfer numbers are capped at Pasta Point, Lohis and Kandooma Right, and access is sold as a surf pass or a surf package on top of the room. Boat-access resorts trade that walk-out wave for choice: guides pick whichever break suits the day’s swell.

On the break

Walk or paddle out

Your own wave off the island, surfed on your schedule, with the sets in view from the bar. Best for surfers who want the most sessions per day and a partner who is happy on the beach. Expect capped numbers and a pass or package.

Boat access

Guided boat trips

Five to thirty minutes by boat to a menu of breaks, with a guide choosing the wave for the conditions and your level. Best for improving surfers, coaching, and anyone who would rather have variety than a single home break.

Surf Season by Atoll

The surf comes with the southwest monsoon, and the whole country shares one broad season. What changes by region is when the waves are cleanest and how busy the line-ups get, which is worth matching to your level before you pick a resort.

For the weather beyond the waves, month by month, see the best time to visit the Maldives.

North & South Malé
April – October

Small waves start from mid-February or March; by April the wind improves and mid-sized swells light up the best breaks. June to August brings the biggest, most consistent surf and the busiest line-ups at the famous North Malé waves.

Central atolls
April – October

Laamu, Thaa, Meemu and Dhaalu. April, May and October bring lighter winds and glassy waves for beginners and intermediates; June to September has the biggest swell for advanced surfers. December to March is the off season in Laamu.

Huvadhoo (deep south)
Feb – mid-June · Sept – mid-Nov

Clean head-high days are most frequent in these two windows. Mid-June to late August brings large swell, strong wind and stormier days; mid-November to mid-February is the small-wave season, chest-high and good for learning.

Surf Resorts by Atoll

The Malé-atoll surf resorts are a speedboat ride from the airport, which makes travelling with boards simple. The central and southern islands mean a seaplane or a domestic flight, and emptier waves at the other end.

Booking Tips for a Surf Trip

What to settle before you book a Maldives surf resort, so the waves you are paying for are the ones you actually get.

01
Book the Surf with the Room

The walk-out waves are capped, and some resorts only sell surf as a package through their partner. Secure the surf pass or package when you book the villa, especially for June to August.

02
Match the Wave to Your Level

These are reef breaks over shallow coral. Learners belong on Kitchens, The Shoulder or Nonyas; Kandooma Right, Yin Yang and Boatyards are for experienced surfers. Tell the surf team your level and let them choose.

03
Pick the Atoll by Month

April to October for the Malé and central atolls, with the biggest swell in mid-season. For a quieter line-up in the shoulders, or late in the year, look south to Huvadhoo.

04
Check the Board Rules on Your Transfer

Domestic flights take boards up to about seven feet including the bag, and seaplane allowances vary. With a longer quiver, a speedboat resort near Malé is the easy choice, or rent on the island.

05
Walk-Out Wave or Boat Menu

A wave off the island means surfing whenever it is on. Boat trips run on the surf team’s schedule, often twice a day, but open up far more breaks. Decide which matters more to you before you choose.

06
Pack Reef Booties

The water is warm enough that you will not need a wetsuit, but the coral is shallow. Pack reef booties and a rash vest, and surf within your level.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which resort in the Maldives is best for surfing?
It depends on how you want to surf. For a wave on the doorstep, Cinnamon Dhonveli (Pasta Point), Adaaran Select Hudhuranfushi (Lohis Left) and Kandooma Maldives (Kandooma Right) are the classic trio, each with capped surfer numbers. For luxury with a guided boat programme, Four Seasons Kuda Huraa reaches seven North Malé breaks within fifteen minutes. For empty line-ups, COMO Maalifushi (the only resort in Thaa) and Six Senses Laamu (one of two resorts in Laamu) sit far from the Malé crowds.
Does the Maldives have good surfing?
Yes. The waves are reef breaks, not beach breaks: long lefts and rights peeling over coral in water around 28–30°C, so no wetsuit is needed. The southwest-monsoon swell runs roughly April to October. Level matters, because the coral is shallow and several of the best waves are advanced-only barrels, but most of the resorts on this page can also reach a softer wave for improving surfers.
How much does a surf trip to the Maldives cost?
The resorts on this page start from about $180 to $1,770 a night for the room. Add the return transfer, from about $80 to $950 per person depending on speedboat, seaplane or domestic flight, and the surf access itself, which is usually sold separately as a surf pass or surf package by the resort’s surf partner. Ask for all three in one quote so nothing is missing.
Which month is best to surf in the Maldives?
For the Malé and central atolls, April to October. April and May, and again October, bring lighter winds and glassier, smaller waves that suit most surfers; June to September has the biggest swell, stronger winds and more storms, which suits advanced surfers. In Huvadhoo in the deep south, the cleanest head-high days come from February to mid-June and again from September to mid-November.
Which Maldives resorts have a surf break right on the island?
On this page: Cinnamon Dhonveli, Hudhuranfushi, Kuda Villingili, Kandooma, Anantara Veli, Niyama, and Six Senses Laamu. At each you can walk or paddle out without a boat, though the resort still controls access: capped numbers, a surf pass, or a package booked through its surf partner.
Can beginners surf in the Maldives?
Yes, at the right resort. Kandooma has Kitchens, its own gentle learner wave; Six Senses Laamu has The Shoulder, a soft-rolling wave a short paddle from the beach; and the Anantara islands send learners to Nonyas, a slow right five minutes away. Surf schools such as Tropicsurf coach every level. Avoid the heavy mid-season swells, and aim for the shoulder months or, in Huvadhoo, the small-wave window from mid-November to mid-February.
Do I need a surf pass?
Often, yes. Lohis Left at Adaaran Select Hudhuranfushi is for Surf Pass holders, capped in number; Kandooma Maldives requires stays with surf to be booked as a Perfect Wave package; and COMO Maalifushi sells a Surf Pass for its guided multi-atoll trips. Anantara Veli lets experienced surfers paddle out to Veli Left without a pass, and the house waves at Niyama (Vodi) and Six Senses Laamu are a paddle from the island too. Because caps fill in peak months, book the surf together with the room.
Where is the best place to surf in the Maldives in September?
September is still inside the April–October season for the Malé and central atolls, with swell that tends to suit intermediate and advanced surfers. It is also when Huvadhoo starts to clean up again, with head-high days returning, so Ayada is a strong pick for a quieter line-up late in the year.
Should I choose a surf resort or a surf charter?
A resort gives you a comfortable room, a capped or guided home break and something for non-surfers to do. A charter, usually seven to twelve nights on a boat, chases empty waves across the outer atolls but trades the villa for a cabin. If a partner or family is coming, a resort is almost always the better fit. Our surfing guide in the Journal covers the charter option.
Can I bring my own surfboard?
Yes, but check the transfer. Domestic flights cap surfboards at around seven feet including the board bag, and seaplane rules vary, so the speedboat resorts near Malé are the easiest with a full quiver. Most of the surf teams on these islands rent boards too, so ask before you pack.
