Opened 2016 Renovated 2020

Finolhu is the Maldives resort that doesn't take itself too seriously — retro-chic villas, the country's original beach club (1OAK), and a 1.8 km sandbank. In the UNESCO Baa Atoll Biosphere with Hanifaru Bay mantas 30 minutes away. Five-star quality with genuine personality.

Choose Your Villa

Finolhu's 125 villas spread across four islands — the main island, overwater jetties, and a private island. The retro-chic design by Muza Lab runs throughout — bold colours, vintage surf boards, and mid-century modern furniture. 79 of 125 villas have private pools. The two Rockstar Ocean Villas at the end of the jetty are the headline — two-bedroom residences with private bar, butler service, and a Marshall sound system.

Your Days on the Island

Finolhu blends marine life with beach club energy. The 1OAK club hosts international DJs and sunset sessions, while the Baa Atoll UNESCO Biosphere offers manta rays at Hanifaru Bay just 15 minutes by boat. The dive centre, water sports, and a 1.8 km sandbank complete the picture — more social and active than the typical Maldives resort.

Hanifaru Bay manta rays. Finolhu's location in the Baa Atoll UNESCO Biosphere Reserve puts you just 30 minutes from Hanifaru Bay — one of the world's largest manta ray feeding aggregations. Between June and November, hundreds of mantas gather in these waters, and Finolhu runs regular excursions to the site. It's one of the top marine wildlife experiences in the Indian Ocean.

Finolhu's house reef is good but not the island's headline — that belongs to the wider Baa Atoll UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. The reef accessible from shore has coral gardens with decent fish life, but the real marine experiences are the guided excursions: Hanifaru Bay manta ray feeding (30 min by boat, Jun–Nov), reef safaris to nearby sites, and the PADI dive centre covering the atoll's best walls and channels.

Our Take

Who This Resort is For

Finolhu is the antidote to the cookie-cutter Maldives resort. The retro-chic design, 1OAK beach club, and 1.8 km sandbank create an energy that's rare in the atolls — this is where you come if you want five-star quality with personality. The Baa Atoll UNESCO Biosphere location adds manta rays at Hanifaru Bay, and the dining ranges from sandbank seafood to overwater Japanese. It's not the most serene island in the Maldives, and that's entirely the point.

Ideal for

  • Couples and groups wanting a social, high-energy Maldives experience with beach club nights and DJ sets
  • Marine life enthusiasts — Hanifaru Bay manta rays are 30 minutes away, one of the world's top encounters
  • Families — kids club, pool villas, and an activity programme that keeps all ages entertained
  • Instagram-savvy travellers — the 1.8 km sandbank, retro design, and Crab Shack are endlessly photogenic

Consider elsewhere if

  • Couples seeking total seclusion — 1OAK beach club and 125 villas create a lively atmosphere
  • Budget travellers — 5-star pricing with pool villas starting around $750/night plus seaplane
  • Hardcore divers — the house reef is decent but not exceptional; Baa Atoll sites are the draw
  • Those wanting a minimalist, understated aesthetic — Finolhu's retro-chic design is bold and colourful
