Opened 1972 Renovated 2004

The Maldives' original resort — first guests arrived October 1972 — is now the most accessible 5-star in the atolls. Ten minutes from Velana, seven restaurants under a dine-around all-inclusive, and a Majaa Kids Club built on Maldivian culture. Heritage, family credentials, and competitive pricing in one package.

Majaa Kids Club. "Majaa" means fun in Dhivehi. The club runs 9am–6pm daily for ages 4–13, free of charge, with a strong cultural curriculum: Bodu Beru Maldivian drumming, coconut arts and crafts, Dhivehi language lessons, and fish-feeding sessions. Marine biology sessions introduce children to the reef ecosystem. One of the more culturally immersive kids clubs in the atolls.
Family & Kids

Family-Friendly Features

Majaa Kids Club stands out for its cultural programme: Bodu Beru drumming, Dhivehi language lessons, coconut crafts, and marine biology sessions give children a real taste of Maldivian life rather than generic resort activities. The 10-minute speedboat transfer removes seaplane complexity, and the Family Beach Villa sleeps six. Seven restaurants under one AI means no mealtime arguments.

House Reef & Underwater

5.8
House Reef
Lux Atolls Reef Score · top 50% of Maldives resorts

Shore entry · 6 designated entry points around the island

Baby reef sharks in lagoon · Stingrays · 30+ world-class atoll dive sites

Six designated snorkeling entry points around the island give direct shore access. Baby reef sharks, stingrays, and turtles are reliably present in the lagoon, and the reef has recovered well from bleaching events. It's not among the Maldives' elite house reefs — Baros and Vabbinfaru nearby are stronger — but is perfectly respectable for a large resort at this price point. The real strength is the atoll: Banana Reef, HP Reef, and Lankan Manta Point are world-class dives.

Reef Sharks
Baby blacktip reef sharks reliably present in the lagoon
Sea Turtles
Green turtles — regular sightings while snorkeling the house reef
Stingrays
Stingrays on sandy flats — seen around the island regularly
Tropical Reef Fish

Octopus
Present on coral formations — spotted by divers on house reef
Dolphins
Spinner dolphins — frequent on sunset cruises in North Malé channel
Manta Rays
Lankan Manta Point within boat range — seasonal June–November
Not typical at this reef (−1)
Whale Sharks
Seasonal excursions to South Ari Atoll — not seen at the house reef

PADI dive center on-site. Night snorkeling available. Marine life observations sourced from dive logs and guest reports.

Our Take

Who This Resort is For

Niva Kurumba's unique position — original resort, closest 5-star to the airport, best dining breadth in its segment — makes it a logical anchor choice. No other property within a 10-minute speedboat ride offers seven restaurants, a genuine kids culture program, and 30+ world-class dive sites. The rebrand to Niva is recent (March 2026), but the fundamentals that made Kurumba the Maldives' most historically significant resort remain unchanged.

Ideal for

  • Families who want cultural depth alongside resort amenities — Majaa Kids Club's Bodu Beru drumming and marine biology sessions are genuinely different
  • Couples and groups who want dining variety — 7 restaurants under one AI package, from overwater teppanyaki to Lebanese mezze, is unmatched at this price
  • Divers — North Malé Atoll's 30+ sites include some of the Maldives' most celebrated dives, with Euro-Divers PADI 5-Star on site
  • First-time Maldives visitors — easy airport transfer, no seaplane complexity, and a large resort with something for everyone makes it a low-risk introduction

Consider elsewhere if

  • Those wanting ultra-seclusion — 180 rooms with nightly entertainment means this is a social, active resort
  • Snorkeling purists — the house reef is good but not exceptional; nearby Baros and Vabbinfaru have stronger coral
  • Guests who prefer small and intimate — the scale, pool configuration, and entertainment program suit those who want activity, not solitude

Frequently Asked Questions

Niva Kurumba Maldives — FAQ

Has Kurumba Maldives rebranded?
Yes — on March 31, 2026, the resort officially rebranded to Niva Kurumba Maldives, as part of VERSA Hospitality's transition to the Niva Hotels & Resorts brand. The website is now nivakurumba.com. The island, facilities, and team remain unchanged.
How long is the transfer to Niva Kurumba?
Ten minutes by speedboat from Velana International Airport — one of the shortest resort transfers in the Maldives. No seaplane required, no daylight restrictions, and arrivals at any hour are straightforward. Return transfer is approximately USD 122 per person.
What restaurants does Niva Kurumba have?
Seven: Thila (overwater seafood grill, award-winning), Vihamanaa (international buffet), Hamakaze (Japanese teppanyaki, overwater), Al Qasr (Lebanese & Moroccan), Mahal (Indian), Khing Thai (Thai), and Isola (Italian). The All-Inclusive dine-around covers all seven — unusually generous for the Maldives.
Is Niva Kurumba good for families?
Yes — the Majaa Kids Club (ages 4–13, free) is one of the more culturally distinctive in the atolls, with Bodu Beru drumming lessons, Dhivehi language classes, marine biology sessions, and coconut crafts. The Family Beach Villa sleeps up to 6. The short speedboat transfer also removes the seaplane complexity that makes Maldives travel harder with children.
Is Niva Kurumba all-inclusive?
Optional — you can book bed-and-breakfast, half-board-plus, or the Dine Around All-Inclusive (DAAI). The DAAI covers all 7 restaurants including Thila and Hamakaze, a selection of beers, wines, and cocktails, plus two excursions per 7-night stay. Premium brands and minibar are excluded. It's one of the more generous AI packages in the Maldives.
