Opened 1999 Renovated 2019

The only resort in Faafu — a rare situation in the Maldives where one 4-star owns every dive site in the atoll. Werner Lau's PADI 5-Star, long-established on-island, leads drift dives with 11 multilingual instructors. The trade-offs are honest: dated rooms, no pool villas, no butlers — but for divers who prioritise water over finish, the value is unmatched.

Dining

2 Restaurants & 2 Bars

Filitheyo's dining scene is deliberately small - two restaurants and two bars, all on a compact island easy to circle in 15 minutes. The main buffet cycles over 14 days across international and Maldivian themes; the Sunset Restaurant opens for a la carte at the western tip. Best value is the Full Board plan at $80 pp/day.

International
The resort's only buffet - a large open pavilion with a 14-day cycle of international and Maldivian menus, live cooking stations, and fresh pasta/bread. Breakfast runs to 9:30am only, which can be tight for late risers.

Dining Inclusions

With only one a la carte restaurant, the meal plan economics are simple: Bed & Breakfast makes no sense (breakfast ends at 9:30am); Half Board covers dinner at the buffet; Full Board adds lunch. The All-Inclusive is mandatory on some rate codes - it bundles house wines, cocktails, and minibar soft drinks.

Your Days on the Island

Werner Lau's PADI 5-Star dive centre anchors the activity program - 30+ Faafu sites, daily boat trips, and Nitrox on tap. On land it's pared-back: one pool, spa, gym, kids club, and beach sports. The seclusion is the point - Faafu Atoll has no other resorts.

Family-Friendly Features

Filitheyo is a realistic family pick for reef-loving kids rather than a dedicated family resort. The free Kids Club (ages 3-12) runs arts & crafts, marine education, and shoreline treasure hunts from a proper outdoor playground; a shallow northern lagoon and mini-golf course fill the afternoons. Water Villas are off-limits to under-12s, so families need a Beach or Family Villa, and the Main Restaurant's 9:30am breakfast cut-off can bite with slow-moving children.

House Reef & Underwater

8.6
Excellent House Reef
Lux Atolls Reef Score · top 10% of Maldives resorts

Shore entry · 7 designated entry points around the island

North wall 50 m+ · 2 scuttled wrecks · reef sharks, turtles, mantas

Filitheyo has one of the stronger shore-entry house reefs in the Maldives - seven designated entry points circle the island, and the north wall drops to over 50 m. Reef sharks, turtles, stingrays, and Napoleon wrasse are reliable; mantas and whale sharks are opportunistic on the north wall. Two purposely-scuttled wrecks sit on the east and south reef. The reef has stronger coral cover than most mid-tier Maldives resorts - one of the genuine reasons to pick Filitheyo over a cheaper North Male option.

Getting There

Transfer from Malé

Filitheyo is roughly 120 km south-west of Male - a 35-minute seaplane flight followed by a short dhoni hop to the jetty. Seaplanes are daylight-only, so late arrivals usually stage overnight in Male. Round-trip transfer is approximately USD 478 per adult; children under 2 are free, children 2-11 are USD 305.

Our Take

Who This Resort is For

Filitheyo is a divers' 4-star in the body of a resort that accidentally also has one of the finest house reefs in the Maldives. The value equation is specific: you pay less than North Ari peers like Ellaidhoo, you get the entire Faafu Atoll to yourself, and Werner Lau runs the dive shop. What you give up is pool villas, dining breadth, and any pretense of luxury finish. For the right traveller - reef-first, couple or family, allergic to Maldives crowds - it's one of the best-value bookings in the country.

Ideal for

  • Divers and serious snorkellers - 30+ Faafu sites, Werner Lau PADI 5-Star, and a shore-entry house reef in the Maldives' top 10% are the entire point of this resort
  • Couples and reef-first travellers who prefer a quiet 4-star to a busy 5-star - Faafu's only resort means no boat traffic, no neighbours, and no crowded sandbanks
  • Families on a diving budget - Kids Club 3-12 is free, Family Villa sleeps four, and kids under 11 eat free (max 2 per villa); seaplane complexity is the main catch
  • Manta enthusiasts on a mid-tier budget - Manta Point runs year-round with peak Dec-Apr, and the resort boat goes 2-3 times weekly

Consider elsewhere if

  • Pool villa seekers - Filitheyo has zero private-pool accommodation at any category, including the $495/night Water Villa (jacuzzi only)
  • Foodies - two restaurants and a 14-day buffet cycle means dining variety is the single weakest part of the product
  • Honeymooners wanting 5-star polish - villas are dated, some Superior Villas are semi-detached with thin walls, and there is no butler service

Frequently Asked Questions

Filitheyo Island Resort Maldives — FAQ

Is Filitheyo the only resort in Faafu Atoll?
Yes - Filitheyo is the only resort operating in Faafu Atoll and has been since it opened in 1999. The atoll has 23 islands, of which 15 are uninhabited and 5 are local villages. This means the house reef has no neighbouring resort boat traffic and every dive site in the atoll is effectively exclusive to Filitheyo guests.
How do you get to Filitheyo Island Resort?
A 35-minute seaplane flight from Velana International Airport, then a 10-minute traditional dhoni ride to the jetty. The seaplane is mandatory - there is no speedboat option because Faafu sits 120 km from Male. Transfer is around USD 478 per adult roundtrip, children 2-11 USD 305, under 2 free.
Does Filitheyo have pool villas?
No - Filitheyo has no private-pool category. The Water Villa (90 sqm, from ~$495/night) has an indoor jacuzzi tub and direct steps into the lagoon, but no pool. All villas share access to the single freeform infinity pool with swim-up bar. Guests who need a private pool should look at Vilamendhoo or the Dhaalu-atoll resorts next door.
Is the house reef really that good?
Yes - Filitheyo's house reef consistently ranks in the top 10% of Maldives resorts. Seven shore entry points circle the island, the north wall drops past 50 m with occasional whale shark sightings, and there are two purposely-scuttled wrecks on the east and south reef. Werner Lau's PADI 5-Star centre runs 30+ atoll dive sites with year-round manta potential at Manta Point.
Is Filitheyo good for families with kids?
Reasonably - the Kids Club runs ages 3-12 from 9am to 5pm complimentary, the Family Villa sleeps 2 adults + 2 children, and kids under 11 eat free (max 2 per villa). Children under 12 are not allowed in Water Villas, so families must book Beach or Family Villas. Babysitting is $15/hour, evening only.
