Dining on the island centres on Safar — the Dhivehi word for journey — an overwater pavilion built around a Josper charcoal grill, with a menu that roams from Asian spice markets to the Middle East, and a sculpted bar at its heart. Each residence also has a private chef for meals at home, and sister resort Finolhu's Kanusan and Arabian Grill are a short boat ride away.

A glass-topped bar glows beneath a sculpted, coral-like canopy at the centre of the Safar pavilions, mixing cocktails inspired by spice routes and distant ports. Sunken seating runs out along two jetty platforms over the water, which makes it the island's natural gathering point as the sun goes down.

Transfer from Malé
A 30-minute seaplane from Velana crosses to Baa, landing you by an arrival pavilion whose roofs rise like dhoni sails. The resort also arranges arrival by sea and quotes transfers with your stay rather than publishing a fare. Late international flights can route through Dharavandhoo's domestic airport, as guests of sister resort Finolhu do.

.Here is closer to a private house than a resort: seven double-aspect residences and one buyout island, each with a chef, a Roohu and a pool long enough to swim lengths. The resort's own engine prices the smallest home from about $10,000 a night on Bed & Breakfast, with a seven-night minimum on the dates we checked, so it only makes sense with the bedrooms full. Fill them, and it is one of the most private stays in Baa — with Finolhu's restaurants next door when the party wants company.
