Drop seven metres onto a reef the resort printed in ceramic and seeded from its own nursery, then swim back across a lagoon so pale and shallow it reads white from the air.
4-Star Resort Speedboat 45 min 3D-Printed Reef Overwater Spa
For travellers who want a 45-minute speedboat, a real beach in front of the room and none of the five-star markup. The money here goes where it shows — solar hot water across the whole island, glass bottles instead of plastic, an overwater spa with an ice room. What you don't get is a natural house reef: the coral is the reef the resort grew itself.
Seven categories, and the split that matters is which restaurant your board basis buys you — the garden and superior rooms eat at Samuga on the beach, the Premium Beach Villas and Water Villas at Hiya over the lagoon. Only one room on the island has a pool: The Summer House, a two-bedroom beach suite sleeping six. The Water Villas take no one under fifteen.

Dining
2 Restaurants & 3 Bars
Two restaurants and three bars for 156 rooms, and the pairing is set by room category rather than by choice — Samuga, the beachside buffet, serves the garden and superior rooms; Hiya, out over the water, serves the Premium Beach Villas and Water Villas. The three bars run the rest of the island: Nevi on the sunset beach, Baraveli under its tiki carvings, and Avi on the lagoon with the à la carte menu.
Samuga
International Buffet
The main restaurant, named for the navigator's compass, sitting under thatch on the beach with tables spilling out onto the sand between the palms. Buffet breakfast, lunch and dinner on a fourteen-day rotating menu, which is long enough that a week never repeats itself. This is where the garden and superior categories eat.
SettingBeachside · Open-air deck
Our tipTake a deck table on the sand rather than one inside the thatch.
Hiya
International
The overwater restaurant, built out on stilts with the lagoon lit turquoise under the deck at dusk. A semi-buffet with its own à la carte list and the same fourteen-day rotation as Samuga, reserved for Water Villa and Premium Beach Villa guests — which keeps it noticeably quieter than the main restaurant.
SettingOverwater · Semi-buffet
Our tipAsk for a deck table on the outer rail — the light goes at about six.
Avi
Cocktails
The lounge on the lagoon: a high thatched roof, ceiling fans, deep chairs and open sides that frame nothing but water. Premium spirits and a long cocktail list, live music through the evening, and an à la carte kitchen leaning on regional seafood, steaks and chef's specials for anyone who wants dinner away from the buffet.
SettingOverwater · Live music
Our tipThe à la carte menu here is the only alternative to a buffet dinner.
Nevi
Beach Bar
The main bar, named for the captain of the ship, open-sided and facing the water on the sunset side of the island with a blue-plank back bar and beer on tap. There is a snack menu here too — pizzas, sandwiches, burgers and ice cream — which is the island's answer to a light lunch away from the restaurants.
SettingBeachfront · Sunset side
Our tipSunset side, so the bar stools face the light — get there early.
Baraveli
Cocktails
Named after the hermit crabs that run the island at dusk, this is a thatched hut on the sand with hand-carved wooden tiki figures across its front and bean bags scattered around it. Caribbean-inspired tiki cocktails, no shoes, and the water sports racks a few metres away.
SettingBeachfront · Bean bags on sand
Our tipBean bags on the sand rather than the bar — it is that kind of bar.
Meal Plans
Dining Inclusions
Two board bases sell on the resort's own booking engine — Half Board and Full Board. There is no room-only or bed-and-breakfast rate. An All-Inclusive plan exists but runs through operators rather than the direct site, so its supplement comes back with your quote.
Engine rates are quoted before 28.7% tax and service charge. The All-Inclusive plan is sold through operators rather than the resort's own booking site, so its supplement comes back with your quote.

Experiences & Activities
Your Days on the Island
The dive base is Feena Water Sports & Dive by Diverland, running SSI courses out to more than forty sites in the atoll, and the snorkelling headline is on the doorstep — the Guinness-record 3D-printed reef, seven metres down a few fin kicks off the main jetty. Above water the lagoon is shallow and wide enough for glass-bottom kayaks, catamarans and windsurfers, and the evenings run to boduberu drumming, live music and a weekly beach barbecue.

The reef they printed. In August 2018 the resort sank the world's largest 3D-printed ceramic reef at Blue Lagoon, seven metres down just off the main jetty. Alex Goad of Melbourne's Reef Design Lab modelled the forms on Maldivian coral, a printer moulded them in ceramic over 24 hours, the moulds were shipped out and filled with marine concrete, and fragments from the resort's own nursery were transplanted onto them. Guinness recognised it in 2021; a model of it sat in MoMA's Broken Nature.

Where the money went. Every litre of hot water on Summer Island is solar-heated, round the clock. Plastic water bottles are gone from the rooms, the restaurants, the shop and even the boats — replaced with reusable glass filled from the island's own reverse-osmosis plant, the boat bottles wearing bespoke sleeves so they survive the ride. Fogging has been replaced by an integrated mosquito-trapping system so the dragonflies and pollinators come back.

Summer Island has no natural fringing reef, and that is the honest starting point: the island sits inside a broad, shallow, sandy lagoon. What it has instead is a reef it built. In August 2018 the resort sank the world's largest 3D-printed ceramic reef at Blue Lagoon, a sandy patch seven metres down just off the main jetty, and transplanted coral from its own nursery onto it. Years on, the structures hold their own residents — a giant moray among them. For coral walls you take the boat: Diverland runs snorkelling trips to the natural reefs nearby, and more than forty dive sites sit within reach.

Getting There
Transfer from Malé
Forty-five minutes by shared speedboat from Velana International, or fifteen by seaplane. Transfers are mandatory and booked through the resort — the speedboat is what almost everyone takes, at roughly two-fifths of the seaplane fare.

Velana Airport → Ziyaaraifushi · ~45 min · scheduled
~$198 pp roundtrip
Seaplane
Fastest, daylight only

Children travel at half the adult speedboat fare. Seaplanes fly daylight only, so a late landing means the boat or a night in Malé.

Our Take
Who This Resort is For
Reviewed by Tym Lewtak, founder of LuxAtolls·Updated Oct 04, 2026
Summer Island is a 4-star island doing 4-star things well: a wide beach, a genuine overwater spa with a steam and an ice room, a walk-in infinity pool, glass instead of plastic and solar hot water across the whole property. It is also honest about what it is not. There is no natural house reef, no kids club, one buffet and one overwater restaurant, and a single room with a pool. What you buy is a 45-minute arrival, a room in the $225–$365 range, and a reef the resort planted itself — a better story than most islands at this price can tell.
Ideal for
Snorkellers curious about restoration — the Guinness-record 3D-printed reef sits seven metres down a few fin kicks off the main jetty, with the coral nursery that seeded it alongside.
Short-transfer travellers — 45 minutes by shared speedboat at $198 per person return, no seaplane timetable to catch and no overnight in Malé if the flight lands late.
Couples who want overwater without a five-star bill — the twenty Water Villas are 45 sqm with a private sundeck and no one under fifteen, from around $365 a night in low season.
Travellers who care where the money goes — every litre of hot water is solar-heated, plastic bottles are gone from rooms, bars and boats, and the fogging truck has been replaced by mosquito traps.
Consider elsewhere if
Anyone whose holiday is the house reef — there is no natural fringing coral here, and the good walls are a fifteen-minute boat ride rather than a walk down the beach.
Families needing a programme — no kids club, no teen club and no babysitting appear on any of the resort's own material, and the Water Villas take no one under fifteen.
Guests who want a pool at the villa — only The Summer House has one, and the jacuzzis in the Premium Beach Villas and Water Villas are bath tubs, not plunge pools.
Dine-around travellers — two restaurants for 156 rooms, and which one you eat in is set by your room category rather than by the night.

Frequently Asked Questions
Summer Island Maldives — FAQ
How much is the speedboat transfer to Summer Island Maldives?
Forty-five minutes from Velana International, at US$198 per adult and US$99 per child round trip from 1 November 2026 — US$195 and US$97.50 before that. A seaplane covers the same route in fifteen minutes at US$470 per adult return. Transfers are mandatory and booked through the resort.
Is Summer Island Maldives all-inclusive?
Its own booking engine sells only Half Board and Full Board, with Full Board around $36 per adult per night above Half Board. A Standard All Inclusive plan exists and is sold through operators, so its supplement comes back with a quote rather than off the website. All rates are quoted before 28.7% tax and service.
Does Summer Island Maldives have a house reef?
Not a natural one — the island sits in a wide, shallow, sandy lagoon with no fringing coral. What it has is the world's largest 3D-printed ceramic reef, sunk at Blue Lagoon seven metres down off the main jetty in 2018 and seeded from the resort's own nursery. For natural reef, the dive base runs boat snorkelling trips.
Can children stay in the Water Villas at Summer Island Maldives?
No — the twenty Water Villas take two adults and no one under fifteen. Families use the beach categories instead: fourteen sets of Superior Bungalows interconnect, and The Summer House is a two-bedroom beach suite sleeping six adults, or four adults and two children. There is no kids club on the island.
Is Summer Island Maldives a 4-star or a 5-star resort?
Four-star, and the property has described itself that way since its 2015 rebuild. Rooms run 38–45 sqm with air conditioning, a safe and a TV; there is no butler and only The Summer House has a pool. What sits above the tier is the overwater spa with its steam and ice rooms, and the 3D-printed reef off the jetty.
