Lux Atolls Reef Score · bottom 30% of Maldives resorts

Velassaru has no true house reef accessible from shore — the island sits in a sandy lagoon with some scattered coral patches. Serious snorkeling requires boat excursions to nearby reefs (~10 minutes away). The lagoon is safe for beginners but limited in marine diversity.

PADI dive center on-site. Night snorkeling available. Marine life observations sourced from dive logs and guest reports.

Our Take

Who This Resort is For

Reviewed by Tym Lewtak, founder of LuxAtolls Updated Sep 27, 2026

Velassaru delivers a polished five-star experience with modern design and strong dining, all within the most convenient transfer in the luxury segment. The weak link is the house reef — there isn't one from shore. If snorkeling is your priority, look at Baros or Anantara Dhigu instead. But for a stylish base with easy access and excellent food, it's hard to beat.

Ideal for

Couples wanting luxury without a long transfer — 25 minutes door-to-door from Malé airport
Short-stay visitors and long-weekend escapes from Dubai, Singapore, or India
Foodies — five restaurants and two bars for 129 villas is an excellent ratio
First-time Maldives visitors who want a polished, easy introduction to island life

Consider elsewhere if

Snorkeling enthusiasts — no house reef from shore; all good snorkeling requires boat excursions
Families with young children wanting overwater villas — water categories are adults-only
Guests seeking remote seclusion — at 25 minutes from the capital, you see Male on the horizon

Frequently Asked Questions

Niva Velassaru Maldives — FAQ

Is Velassaru Maldives good for snorkeling?

The island has no true house reef — snorkeling from shore is limited to scattered coral patches in the lagoon. For quality snorkeling, the resort runs boat excursions to nearby reefs about 10 minutes away, where you'll see reef sharks, turtles, and diverse marine life.

How far is Velassaru from Malé airport?

Just 25 minutes by speedboat from Velana International Airport — one of the shortest luxury resort transfers in the Maldives. Boats operate around the clock, so there are no daylight restrictions.

Can families stay in overwater villas at Velassaru?

No — all overwater villa categories (Water Bungalow, Water Villa, Water Suite) are adults-only. Families with children must book beach or garden villas. The Two Bedroom Deluxe Villa sleeps up to six.

Is Velassaru Maldives all-inclusive?

Not by default. Four meal plans are available: Bed & Breakfast, Half Board, Full Board, and All-Inclusive. The AI requires a minimum 3-night stay.

What is the difference between Velassaru and Kurumba?

Both are in South Malé Atoll with speedboat transfers. Kurumba is closer (10 min), has a genuine house reef, and feels more family-oriented. Niva Velassaru has a more modern boutique aesthetic, better beaches, and stronger fine dining, but no house reef.
