Ride a dhoni out to Miyaru Kandu's shark-lined overhang before breakfast, surface for an Italian-Maldivian dinner under the stars at Barabaru, then float in a 550 sqm infinity pool.
4-Star Resort Nakai Diving Center 34 Over Water Vaavu Atoll
For divers who would rather spend the budget on tanks than on a butler. Alimathà is a big, unfussy Italian-run island in the Maldives' least-developed atoll, where the famous channels sit minutes from the jetty rather than an hour out. The finish is 4-star and the rooms are simple — what you are buying is the water and the boat schedule.
Four room types, none of them with a private pool: 96 Beach Bungalows ringing the whole island, 34 Over Water fanned north off the jetty, 26 Garden Villas inland behind the palms, and a newer Garden Room block. The official site publishes no nightly rates, so every price here reads On request and we quote live.

Dining
2 Restaurants & 3 Bars
Two restaurants and three bars, all of them Italian-run and all of them casual. The Main Restaurant carries the All-Inclusive board across Italian and Maldivian cooking; Barabaru on the main beach is the à la carte room you book for one night of the week. The bars split the island between them — piano bar in the middle, sand under the Beach Bar, and the Sunset Bar out by the Over Water.
Main Restaurant
Italian & Maldivian
The island's board restaurant and the venue behind the All-Inclusive plan. The kitchen runs two cuisines side by side — Italian and Maldivian — which is unusual in the Maldives and reflects who actually stays here: an Italian-operated island with an Italian chef brigade.
SettingCentral · Buffet service
Our tipAsk which nights the Maldivian side of the pass is cooking.
Barabaru
Seafood
The beach restaurant, which the resort describes as a place of quiet and privacy at night. Tasting menus built on Maldivian seafood cooked to Italian technique, served either inside or out on the sand — the one venue on the island designed for a single special dinner rather than nightly service.
SettingBeachfront · Indoor or under the stars
Our tipBook the outdoor tables — the point of the room is the sky.
Main Bar
Cocktails
A large bar that opens 360° onto the island, with two adjoining areas — one inland, one facing the sea. Live piano bar music runs front of house; the sea-side terrace is the quieter half. All-Inclusive pours are backed by an à la carte list for anything off the standard rail.
SettingCentral · Live piano bar
Our tipSit on the sea-side terrace if you want conversation, not the piano.
Beach Bar
Beach Bar
On the main beach and cut to face west, so it turns gold in the late afternoon. Cold drinks plus a sweet or savoury snack between swims — the daytime bar rather than the evening one.
SettingMain beach · West-facing
Our tipIt faces west — the last hour before sunset is the good one.
Sunset Bar
Cocktails
Out near the Over Water rooms, with seating made from tree trunks set right on the waterline. Nothing between the bench and the horizon, which is the entire idea — the resort calls the last hours of the day here a poetry of sound and colour.
SettingOverwater side · Seafront benches
Our tipClosest bar to the Over Water rooms — no walk back in the dark.
Meal Plans
Dining Inclusions
Alimathà sells two formulas: All-Inclusive and à la carte. The resort does not publish an itemised inclusion list for either, so we confirm exactly what your rate covers — board, drinks brands, and which venues are in or out — in writing before you book.

Experiences & Activities
Your Days on the Island
Diving is the spine of this island and everything else is genuinely a side dish — though the side dish is bigger than most Maldives resorts manage, with a floodlit-scale sports estate that includes a full tennis court and a five-a-side pitch, both on synthetic grass. Snorkelling and diving boats leave morning and afternoon, half day or full day.

Vaavu's channels, worked from the island. The reason people book Alimathà. Miyaru Kandu — an overhang thick with sharks and other pelagics — Fotteyo Kandu, known for soft coral and possible hammerheads, and the gorgonian walls inside the Rakeedhoo channel are all run from the island's own boats, morning and afternoon, half day or full. The resort quotes a boat time for Miyaru Kandu twice and contradicts itself, so we confirm the run time with the dive centre rather than print a number.

The Pandora Project shows the island's plants in ultraviolet — the spectrum insects see and human eyes cannot — and a parallel ocean project translates the electromagnetism of coral reef, bioluminescence and plankton into sound. The group has also spent two years building an astro-photographic archive of the Maldivian sky, which did not previously exist.

Alimathà sits on the eastern side of Vaavu, an atoll whose channels are the least-dived in the country simply because so few resorts were ever built here. The island is ringed by its own reef — the resort describes it as splendid and colourful, inhabited by hundreds of species of fish — but the reason to come is what lies just outside it. Miyaru Kandu's overhang, Fotteyo Kandu and the Rakeedhoo channel are the three names on the dive board. The resort does not publish house-reef entry points or distances, so we do not claim shore access — we ask before you book.

Getting There
Transfer from Malé
Vaavu is one atoll south of Malé and Alimathà sits on its eastern rim, roughly 66 km from the airport. By the resort's own account the island is about 90 minutes from Malé by speedboat or about 20 minutes by seaplane, sea and weather permitting. It publishes no transfer page or price, so we confirm the boat, the timing and the price with the island directly for your dates.

Our Take
Who This Resort is For
Reviewed by Tym Lewtak, founder of LuxAtolls·Updated Oct 04, 2026
Alimathà is the Maldives before the Maldives became a luxury category: a big, flat, palm-covered island with 156 simple rooms, an Italian kitchen and a dive boat leaving twice a day. It has been taking guests since the mid-seventies and it shows in the unfussy finish — but it also shows in the dive board, which is Vaavu's three famous channels and little else. The 550 sqm infinity pool added in the 2021 refit is the one concession to the modern resort playbook. Come for the water, not the villa.
Ideal for
Certified divers on a budget — Miyaru Kandu's shark-lined overhang, Fotteyo Kandu and the Rakeedhoo channel are all run from the island's own boats, morning and afternoon
Italian-speaking travellers — the island is run by the NAKAI Group out of Malé with an Italian kitchen brigade and Italian-Maldivian menus in both restaurants
Sporty groups who get restless on a small island — tennis and five-a-side pitches on synthetic grass, beach volleyball, gym and a 550 sqm infinity pool with its own jacuzzi
Repeat Maldives visitors who want the emptiest atoll — Vaavu has a handful of resorts and channel dives that see a fraction of the traffic of Ari or Baa
Consider elsewhere if
Anyone who needs a private pool — none of the four room types has one, and the resort publishes no pool villa category at all
Guests who want a 5-star finish — this is a 156-room island with simple rooms of 35–45 sqm and a two-restaurant, three-bar estate, priced accordingly
Travellers who need every cost pinned down from a website — the resort publishes no rates, no transfer price and no meal-plan inclusion list, so everything comes through a quote
Non-divers looking for a resort-led programme — the excursion list is short and the island's energy is built around the dive boat schedule

Frequently Asked Questions
Alimatha Aquatic Resort — FAQ
Does Alimatha Aquatic Resort have overwater villas?
Yes — 34 Over Water rooms of about 40 sqm each, on stilts off the northern side of the island with a private outside deck. None of them has a private pool; no room type at Alimathà does.
Is there a house reef at Alimatha?
The island is ringed by its own coral reef, which the resort describes as splendid and colourful with hundreds of fish species. It does not publish shore-entry points or distances, so we confirm reef access with the island before you book.
What diving is there at Alimatha Aquatic Resort?
The Nakai Diving Center runs boats morning and afternoon, half day or full day, on Vaavu's channels: Miyaru Kandu, whose overhang draws sharks and pelagics; Fotteyo Kandu, known for soft coral and possible hammerheads; and Rakeedhoo, with gorgonian-covered walls inside the channel. The resort rates its night diving among the best in the country.
What are the Alimatha caves?
Vaavu's channel dives are known for overhangs — the resort's dive centre describes Miyaru Kandu's overhang, Fotteyo Kandu's overhangs and multicoloured soft coral, and gorgonian-covered walls inside the Rakeedhoo channel. All three are worked from the island's own dive boats.
Which room should you book at Alimatha?
Over Water sits in the quietest corner of the island, about 40 sqm, and is closest to the Sunset Bar. Beach Bungalows ring the whole island at 35–45 sqm. Garden Villas and the newer Garden Rooms are inland. No category has a pool, so the choice is view and walk, not facilities.
Is Alimatha all inclusive?
The resort sells an All-Inclusive formula alongside à la carte dining, but publishes no itemised inclusion list. We confirm board, drinks and which venues are included in writing with your quote — the à la carte beach restaurant Barabaru is normally separate.
How do you get to Alimatha Aquatic Resort from Malé?
Alimathà is in Vaavu Atoll, roughly 66 km south of Velana International Airport. The resort puts it at about 90 minutes by speedboat or about 20 minutes by seaplane. It publishes no transfer page or price, so we confirm the boat, timing and price for your dates.
