Wade off the sand onto a reef that rings the whole island, then follow a marked channel out to the Rannamaari — a dredger sunk here in 1999 and now a wreck dive on your doorstep.
5-Star Resort Speedboat 25 min House Reef 9.2 All-Inclusive
Banyan Group's dive-led island in North Malé, rebranded from Angsana to Dhawa in 2023 and sold on two all-inclusive plans. Forty-five beachfront villas on an island barely 200 metres across, one restaurant, one bar, and Banyan Tree Vabbinfaru three minutes away by ferry. Small and unhurried by design — the reef, not the resort, is the programme here.
Forty-five villas and every one of them on the beach — the island is too small for an overwater row, and with the reef a short swim off the sand it hardly matters. Two sizes: a 57 sqm pair with a timber veranda and a swing chair, and a 68 sqm pair that adds either a private jet pool or a rainmist lounge. All of them sleep four adults, or two adults and two children.

Dining
1 Restaurant & 1 Bar
Two venues for forty-five villas, and that is rather the point. Riveli sits on the beach with the Indian Ocean straight in front of it, working across Asian, Mediterranean and Maldivian plates in buffet or à la carte. Velaavani is the sand-floored bar under thatch. Beyond them sit a lagoon breakfast, the Ihuru Grill, a Fisherman Beach Dinner and, by ferry, the four venues of sister island Banyan Tree Vabbinfaru.
Riveli Restaurant
International
The island's only restaurant, raised above the beach with panoramic ocean views on three sides. International cooking that ranges through Asian, Mediterranean and Maldivian plates alongside the day's catch, served buffet or à la carte at every meal.
SettingBeachfront · all-day dining
Our tipBuffet and à la carte run side by side — the à la carte side is quieter.
Velaavani Bar
Cocktails
A thatched, sand-floored pavilion at the water's edge, its curved bar front painted as a coral reef and hung with jellyfish lamps. Snacks and drinks through the day, aperitifs as the sun drops, and the island's after-dinner gathering point.
SettingBeachfront · sand floor
Our tipThe reef-painted bar front lights up after dark — time a drink for it.
Meal Plans
Dining Inclusions
Two all-inclusive plans, split by how far dinner travels. Dine, the plan the resort's own engine sells, takes 20% off food at Vabbinfaru's Madi Hiyaa and Saffron. Premium adds premium drinks, an in-villa meal a day, Sangu Garden lunches and buffet nights, and drinks at Naiboli Bar and Madi Hiyaa, a short ferry away.
Rates carry service charge, GST and a Green Tax of $12 per person per night.

Days here run on the water. Children collect snorkel gear from the Marine Centre and swim onto a reef that starts a few strokes off the sand, then take banana boat and fun tube rides in the afternoon. The Dhawa Kids Club handles treasure hunts, beach games and arts and crafts between nine and five, and the Marine Lab runs coral planting that children can genuinely join in. Exceptional House Reef
Lux Atolls Reef Score · top 5% of Maldives resorts
Walk-in house reef · marked channels right around the island
Rannamaari wreck · 300+ fish species · turtles and eagle rays
The reef is why people book Ihuru. It rings the whole island — barely 200 metres across — a short swim off the sand, and the resort's own map marks the channels where you cross it and the single stretch where you don't swim. More than 300 fish species, with turtles and eagle rays on an ordinary morning. Just beyond the drop-off lies the Rannamaari, a dredger scuttled here in 1999 to seed an artificial reef and now sitting coral-grown at about 26 metres. Travel + Leisure Asia named this among the best house reefs in the Maldives in 2025.

Getting There
Transfer from Malé
Ihuru sits 18 km north of Malé and there is only one way there — a 25-minute speedboat from Velana International. No domestic flight, no seaplane daylight window to plan a long-haul arrival around. The resort advertises a complimentary return transfer on its own direct bookings; packaged and third-party rates have priced it separately, so we confirm what your booking carries in writing with your quote.

Our Take
Who This Resort is For
Reviewed by Tym Lewtak, founder of LuxAtolls·Updated Oct 04, 2026
Dhawa Ihuru is a reef with a resort attached, and it is honest about that. Forty-five beach villas, one restaurant, one bar and two all-inclusive plans on an island you can walk around before your coffee cools — plus a house reef good enough that Travel + Leisure Asia put it on a 2025 best-of list. If you want an overwater villa, five restaurants and a lagoon pool, this is the wrong island. If you want to be in the water a minute after leaving your veranda, twenty-five minutes after landing, very little in North Malé beats it.
Ideal for
Snorkellers and divers — the reef rings the whole island a short swim off the sand, Travel + Leisure Asia named it one of the Maldives' best house reefs in 2025, and the Rannamaari wreck sits just past the drop-off
Short-transfer travellers — 25 minutes by speedboat from Velana, with no seaplane daylight window to plan a long-haul arrival around and no domestic flight to connect
Anyone who wants a genuinely small island — 45 beach villas on an island barely 200 metres across, one restaurant, one bar, and a lap of the whole place in under ten minutes
Twin-island diners — Premium, the richer of two all-inclusive plans, reaches Banyan Tree Vabbinfaru's Sangu Garden, Madi Hiyaa and Naiboli Bar by a short ferry
Consider elsewhere if
Overwater villa hunters — all 45 villas sit on the beach; the island has no overwater row at all, and the reef is close enough that it was never built one
Guests who want dining choice — one restaurant and one bar on-island, with the nearest alternative a boat ride across to the sister resort
Big-pool families — only the Jet Pool Villa carries private water, and the facilities list runs to spa, gym, kids club and dive centre with no resort pool
Anyone chasing a far-atoll horizon — this is a North Malé island with resort neighbours in sight, not an hour-deep seaplane hideaway

Frequently Asked Questions
Dhawa Ihuru — FAQ
How far is Dhawa Ihuru from Malé airport?
Eighteen kilometres north of Malé — a 25-minute speedboat from Velana International, running to scheduled departure times. No domestic flight and no seaplane, so the transfer works in the dark and in either direction of a long-haul arrival.
How do airport transfers work at Dhawa Ihuru?
A 25-minute speedboat runs to scheduled departure times, day or night. The resort advertises the return transfer as complimentary on direct bookings, but its own 2023 fact sheet priced it and packaged rates have charged for it separately, so the cost is not something we state in advance — we confirm the transfer terms and your boat times in writing with your quote.
Is the house reef at Dhawa Ihuru good for snorkelling?
It is the reason most people book. The reef rings the whole island a short swim off the beach, the resort's own map marks the crossing channels, and Travel + Leisure Asia named it among the best house reefs in the Maldives in 2025 — more than 300 fish species, with turtles and eagle rays common.
Can you dive the Rannamaari shipwreck from Dhawa Ihuru?
Yes — it is the island's own site. The Rannamaari was a dredger scuttled off Ihuru in 1999 to seed an artificial reef, and it now lies coral-grown at about 26 metres just past the reef edge, worked by nurse sharks and batfish. The on-island PADI 5-Star Gold Palm centre runs it as a house-reef dive.
Does Dhawa Ihuru have a kids club?
Yes — the Dhawa Kids Club, open 9am to 5pm, with indoor and outdoor play areas and a programme of treasure hunts, beach games and arts and crafts. Children under four stay and dine free in existing bedding; from four upward a child rate applies, and we confirm the figure with your quote.
Can you dine at Banyan Tree Vabbinfaru from Dhawa Ihuru?
Yes. Banyan Tree Vabbinfaru is Dhawa Ihuru's sister island, a short scheduled ferry ride away, and the two all-inclusive plans reach it on different terms. All-Inclusive Dine takes 20% off food at Madi Hiyaa and Saffron. All-Inclusive Premium adds daily lunch at Sangu Garden, themed buffet dinners on set nights and a selection of drinks at Naiboli Bar and Madi Hiyaa. Tables there need booking ahead, and we confirm which plan your quote is built on.
