Opened 1983 Renovated 2023

The only resort on Addu — the Maldives' deep south, 480 km below Malé. A 78-bungalow three-star on the footprint of the old RAF Sergeants' Mess on Gan, run by Kaimoo since 1999. Diverland's PADI 5-Star reaches the British Loyalty wreck and a year-round manta cleaning station from the jetty.

Choose Your Villa

Two simple categories housed in 78 garden bungalows — Equator Village is built on the footprint of the old RAF Sergeants' Mess and refurbished as a boutique. There are no overwater villas and no private pools. The Standard Room sleeps two adults plus a child; the Family Room interconnects two units for up to six. This is the trade-off for the deep-south value.

Dining

1 Restaurant & 1 Bar

One restaurant and one bar — a tight footprint by Maldives standards, but enough to anchor an all-inclusive plan with a strong Addu identity. Vaivaru handles every meal with fusion buffets that pull from Maldivian, Asian and European traditions, while the white-wicker Veragan Bar pours from morning until midnight. Beach BBQ and private beachside dinners are bookable extras that cycle weekly.

Vaivaru Restaurant restaurant
Vaivaru Restaurant
International
The single main restaurant, open-air with views over the resort gardens. Buzzing breakfasts run buffet-style; lunch and dinner alternate fusion buffets that lean Asian one night, European the next, with an Afiringe Raha local-Addu corner highlighting Maldivian classics. Themed nights rotate weekly.

Bar
The resort's only bar — white-wicker furniture, ocean to one side and a fern garden to the other. House beers, wines, spirits and cocktails are poured from 09:00 until midnight. Live local musicians play weekly; the antique wartime billiard table sits adjacent.

Your Days on the Island

Diving is the spine — Addu sits 480 km south of the rest of the country and runs a different reef ecosystem to North Malé, with year-round mantas, schooling fish on outer-atoll channels, and the British Loyalty WWII wreck. Diverland's PADI 5-Star centre runs 35+ catalogued sites from the jetty. Outside the water, free bicycles unlock the only inter-island causeway in the Maldives and a chain of inhabited villages.

British Loyalty WWII Wreck Dive. The British Loyalty is the largest shipwreck in the Maldives — a 134-metre WWII tanker scuttled by the British in 1946, now resting between the islands of Maradhoo and Hithadhoo at 16–33 metres. It is Equator Village's headline dive: easy enough for AOW divers in the upper sections, deep enough at the props for a tec experience. The Diverland centre runs the wreck on a regular schedule along with mainstays Mudakan (year-round mantas), Kuda Hoholla and Bushy.

Family & Kids

Family-Friendly Features

Equator Village runs a quieter family setup than the bigger resorts — there is no formal kids club, no babysitting service, and no organised teen programme, but the interconnecting Family Rooms (52 sqm, max six) and the kids' pool adjacent to the main pool cover the basics. The standout for families with curious older kids: free bicycles plus the only inter-island causeway in the Maldives means children can cycle between four inhabited villages, see the WWII airbase ruins, and visit local schools — an authentic Addu experience rather than a sealed-resort one.

7
Very Good House Reef
Lux Atolls Reef Score · top 35% of Maldives resorts

Boat-snorkel access · daily complimentary trips · 5–20 min to outer reefs

Year-round mantas · British Loyalty wreck · WWII-era marine ecosystem

Equator Village's beach reef has been damaged by past coral bleaching and the closeness of working harbours — closer-in snorkelling is mediocre at best. The strength is the wider Addu Atoll: outer-channel reefs, the sheltered atoll lagoon, and Mudakan's year-round manta cleaning station all sit within 30 minutes by dhoni from the jetty. Boat-snorkel trips run daily and are bundled into AI. The British Loyalty wreck adds a marine ecosystem few other reefs offer — batfish, snapper and resident morays. Visibility is 20–30+ metres; water 28–30°C year-round.

Getting There

Transfer from Malé

Addu Atoll is 480 km south of Malé — far too far for seaplane or speedboat. The transfer is a 90-minute Maldivian Airlines domestic flight from Velana (MLE) to Gan (GAN), then a 5-minute van across the causeway to the resort. Round-trip costs approximately USD 465 per person including the airport shuttle.

Our Take

Who This Resort is For

Equator Village's pitch is honest: the cheapest gateway to the Maldives' deep south, on a former RAF base 480 km from anything else. Trade-offs are clear — bungalow rooms only, one restaurant, one bar, a beach reef that has seen better days. The wins are specific: the country's only year-round manta station 30 minutes off the jetty, the British Loyalty wreck on the same dive schedule, and the only atoll where you can cycle between inhabited villages. For divers, no property within 480 km gets close on price.

Ideal for

  • Divers chasing the British Loyalty wreck — the Maldives' largest WWII shipwreck (134 m at 16–33 m) is a 30-min boat ride away, and Diverland's PADI 5-Star runs it on a regular schedule
  • Year-round manta enthusiasts — Mudakan cleaning station hosts mantas all 12 months, the only such site in the Maldives (mantas elsewhere are seasonal)
  • Budget-conscious travellers wanting a 3-star bungalow on a former RAF base with all-inclusive available — the cheapest gateway to the Maldives' deep south
  • Cycling and culture seekers — the only causeway-linked atoll in the Maldives lets you bike between four inhabited islands without a boat

Consider elsewhere if

  • Honeymooners expecting overwater pool villas — there are no overwater categories, no private pools, and no romance-package infrastructure beyond the private beach dinner
  • Short-trip travellers — the 90-minute domestic flight from Malé adds a half-day of transit each way, making stays under five nights feel rushed
  • Beach-snorkellers expecting a top-tier house reef — closer-in coral has been damaged by past bleaching; reef quality lives 5–20 minutes out by boat
  • Foodies wanting variety — one restaurant and one bar is the entire dining footprint; specialty cuisines and signature chefs are absent

Frequently Asked Questions

Equator Village Maldives — FAQ

How do you get to Equator Village from Malé?
A 90-minute Maldivian Airlines domestic flight from Velana International (MLE) to Gan International (GAN), followed by a 5-minute van drive across the causeway. Round-trip costs approximately USD 465 per person. Children 2–11.99 yrs pay USD 340 round-trip; infants under 2 fly free. Allow a 2–3 hour layover at Malé.
Can you dive the British Loyalty wreck from Equator Village?
Yes — Diverland PADI 5-Star runs the wreck on a regular schedule. The British Loyalty is the largest shipwreck in the Maldives — a 134 m WWII tanker scuttled by the British in January 1946, now resting at 16–33 m between Maradhoo and Hithadhoo. Open Water divers can do the upper sections; AOW unlocks the props and engine room.
Does Equator Village have overwater villas?
No. The resort has 78 garden bungalows in two categories — Standard Room (27 sqm, max 3 guests) and Family Room (52 sqm, interconnecting, max 6). There are no overwater villas and no private pools. This is the main trade-off for the 3-star price point in Addu.
Are mantas at Addu year-round?
Yes — Addu is the only atoll in the Maldives with reliable manta sightings all 12 months, thanks to the Mudakan cleaning station. Other Maldives manta sites (Hanifaru Bay, Lankan Manta Point) are seasonal. Diverland runs Mudakan year-round, weather permitting.
Is Equator Village all-inclusive?
Optional. Bed & Breakfast, Half Board, Full Board, and All-Inclusive are all offered. The AI plan adds house beer, wine, soft drinks and selected spirits at Veragan Bar from 09:00 until midnight, plus complimentary bicycles, daily snorkelling boat trips, and one weekly local-island excursion — typically priced around USD 85 per person per day above base room rates.
