Dining here is buffet-led and deliberately unfussy. Kilhi is the main restaurant and the outlet every meal plan is served at, working through Maldivian, Sri Lankan, French and international spreads. Keymaa is the second buffet, built for the Premium Beach Villas. Three bars are strung down the island, from the Olympic-size pool at Dhoni to the sundeck at the southern tip.

The wreck and the station. Addu carries two dives you cannot repeat anywhere else in the Maldives. The British Loyalty is a 140-metre, 5,583-tonne British oil tanker, torpedoed twice in the war and finally scuttled in the atoll lagoon — coral-claimed, penetrable for the trained, and calm enough to run most weeks. Twenty minutes away in Maa Kandu is a manta cleaning station that does not keep a season: with an incoming current the mantas are there in every month of the year, which is the standing answer for anyone travelling outside Baa's window.

An island you can actually walk. Herathera runs four and a half kilometres end to end across forty-two hectares, which makes Canareef one of the longest resort islands in the country. Bicycles are free, electric buggies run around the clock, and the practical effect is that a busy 271-room resort rarely feels like one — there is simply more beach than there are guests to stand on it.

Canareef states it plainly on its own FAQ: there is no house reef. What there is instead is a shallow lagoon at the southern end of the island, off Bar-Kuda, where black-tip reef sharks, eels, turtles and reef fish come in — and a boat ride to some of the best diving in the country. Swimming is confined to the west, sunset side; the east coast is the atoll's barrier, rocky and heavy with surf. Beyond the island, Addu's four channels, its year-round manta station and the British Loyalty wreck do the work a house reef does elsewhere, and they do it better than most.

Transfer from Malé
Addu sits 536 km south of Malé, so getting here is a domestic flight rather than a speedboat — and you cross the equator on the way, which the captain marks with a certificate. From Gan it is ten minutes on the water to the jetty.

Canareef is the Maldives at its least Maldives-like, and that is rather the point. Four and a half kilometres of Herathera, 271 identical-footprint beach bungalows, a bridge you can walk into a village, and a dive centre with a torpedoed tanker and a year-round manta station on its doorstep. What it does not have is a house reef — the resort says so itself — so snorkelling is the southern lagoon or a boat. Come for the atoll, the history and the sheer space, and let the reef be somewhere you go.
