Opened 2014 Renovated 2025

A 200-metre circle of sand with 30 villas, four à la carte restaurants, and a house reef that runs the whole way round. The dining programme — Italian, Mediterranean, Japanese teppanyaki, Latin-American — is bigger than most resorts three times the size. A Small Luxury Hotels member run by Universal Resorts, trading scale for intimacy.

Dining

4 Restaurants & 1 Bar

Four à la carte restaurants on a 200-metre island is the Kandolhu outlier — most resorts this small run a single buffet. Sea Grill plates Italian by night, Olive serves Mediterranean overlooking the reef, Banzai runs teppanyaki from an intimate 6-seat counter, and Ata Roa brings Mexican-Peruvian ceviches and tacos to a jetty eight-seater at lunch.

The Market restaurant
The Market
International
Kandolhu's only all-day venue — breakfast is a buffet with à la carte hot dishes cooked to order, lunch and dinner are entirely à la carte. International dishes with Maldivian touches; the hub if you skip a specialty booking.
SettingAll-day dining · Breakfast buffet · Lunch & dinner à la carte
Our tipBreakfast eggs and pancakes are cooked to order — don't fill up on buffet
Sea Grill restaurant
Sea Grill
Italian
Italian cuisine served beachfront as the sun sets — fresh pasta, wood-fired seafood, and grilled meats on the sand. Kandolhu's romantic anchor dinner and the venue most reviewers flag as the best on the island.
SettingBeachfront · Dinner only · Opens at sunset
Our tipArrive for sunset drinks before the kitchen opens — the best seats go first
Olive restaurant
Olive
Mediterranean
Mediterranean cuisine on a raised open-air deck with 180-degree views across the lagoon. Creative starters — think Mediterranean mezze reinterpreted — and mains that lean toward olive-oil-driven Levantine and Greek plates.
SettingRaised open-air · Dinner only · Panoramic ocean view
Our tipRequest a corner table for the full panoramic view at sunset
Banzai restaurant
Banzai
Japanese
A six-seat teppanyaki counter under a starlit canopy — sushi, sashimi, and tableside grilling with the chef as the entire show. One of the smallest and most intimate Japanese restaurants in the Maldives.
SettingOverwater · 6-seat teppanyaki counter · Dinner only
Our tipBook on arrival — six seats fill fast for the full stay
Ata Roa restaurant
Ata Roa
Latin American
An eight-seat jetty counter where Mexico and Peru meet the equator — tacos, ceviches, and tiraditos at lunch over a sea breeze. Genuinely one of the smallest restaurants in the country.
SettingJetty · 8-seat counter · Lunch only · Toes-in-sand
Our tipStart with the ceviche sampler — portions are small, pairings are the point
Vilu Bar restaurant
Vilu Bar
Cocktails
The island's one bar — handcrafted cocktails, wine, and light bites through the afternoon and into the night. Low-key with live acoustic sets some evenings rather than a dance-floor scene.
SettingPool-adjacent · Afternoon & evening · Light bites
Our tipTry the signature Kandolhu Breeze — house cocktail built around local coconut

Your Days on the Island

A tiny island dials down the on-land programming but amplifies the water: the house reef encircles the whole property, so shore-entry snorkelling is possible from three access points. The in-house Euro-Divers operation runs dives across North Ari — Maaya Thila night dives, Fish Head channel dives, and seasonal manta and whale shark trips south into the Ari corridor.

The house reef encircles the entire island — a rare configuration in the Maldives and one of Kandolhu's defining features. Three designated shore-entry points give direct access to a wall alive with reef sharks, turtles, rays, and dense coral. Because the reef is continuous, every villa is within a minute of coral. TripAdvisor reviews single out the reef repeatedly as 'one of the best we've ever experienced.' The North Ari location also opens up Maaya Thila night dives, Fish Head, and seasonal manta and whale shark excursions.

Our Take

Who This Resort is For

Kandolhu punches far above its size. Four à la carte restaurants and a reef-encircled island on a 200-metre footprint is a configuration almost no other Maldives resort matches — most 30-villa islands stretch to one buffet and a single bar. The trade-off is scale: no kids club, no on-land programme beyond reef and spa. For couples who value a circumnavigable house reef and a five-cuisine dining rotation over amenity breadth, Kandolhu is among the most distinctive boutique options in the atolls.

Ideal for

  • Food-focused couples — four à la carte restaurants across Italian, Mediterranean, Japanese teppanyaki, and Latin American on a single 30-villa island is unusual at any price
  • Snorkelers who want the reef at their door — the house reef encircles the entire island with three entry points, rated among the Maldives' top 10%
  • Honeymooners wanting intimate over spectacular — 30 villas, no kids club, low-key live music rather than a nightly entertainment program
  • Divers — Euro-Divers PADI 5-Star on site, with Maaya Thila night dives, Fish Head, and seasonal manta and whale shark excursions reachable from the dive dhoni

Consider elsewhere if

  • Families with young children — no kids club, no dedicated family programming, and no family-specific villa beyond the 2-bedroom Duplex Pool Villa
  • Guests who want variety of on-land activity — four restaurants and a bar is the whole programme; there are no tennis courts, no golf, no big pool scene
  • Budget travellers — Beach Villas start around $720/night with BB and transfers adding roughly $481 per adult; Ultimate Inclusions pushes daily all-in well above $1,000 per couple
  • Guests who avoid seaplanes — the 25-minute seaplane and 10-minute lagoon speedboat is the only route, and it operates daylight only

Frequently Asked Questions

Kandolhu Maldives — FAQ

How do you get to Kandolhu Maldives?
A 25-minute seaplane flight with Trans Maldivian Airways from Velana International Airport followed by a 10-minute speedboat ride across the lagoon. The resort sits 70 km southwest of Malé in North Ari Atoll. Seaplanes operate in daylight only — evening arrivals overnight in Hulhumalé and connect the next morning.
How many restaurants does Kandolhu have?
Four à la carte restaurants plus a bar — unusually many for a 30-villa resort. Sea Grill plates Italian beachfront at dinner, Olive serves Mediterranean on a raised open-air deck, Banzai is a 6-seat teppanyaki counter, and Ata Roa is an 8-seat jetty counter for Mexican and Peruvian lunch. The Market is the all-day international venue that opens for breakfast.
Is Kandolhu Maldives good for snorkeling?
Yes — the house reef encircles the entire island, which is rare in the Maldives. Three designated shore-entry points give access to a reef alive with blacktip reef sharks, hawksbill turtles, eagle rays, and dense hard coral. TripAdvisor reviews consistently rank the reef among the best they have ever experienced, and the resort is one of relatively few with a continuous circumnavigable house reef.
Is Kandolhu Maldives all-inclusive?
It is offered as an option. The Ultimate Inclusions plan covers breakfast, lunch and dinner at all four restaurants, 30+ international wines, premium spirits, cocktails and beers, plus a choice of one guided private snorkeling tour or Champagne sunset cruise per person, and a 10% spa discount. Bed & Breakfast and à la carte dine-around half-board plans are also available.
Is Kandolhu Maldives adults-only?
No — children are welcome but there is no dedicated kids club, teen programme, or family-specific activity schedule. The 30-villa scale and dinner-focused dining programme mean most guests are couples and honeymooners. The 2-bedroom Duplex Pool Villa accommodates families who want to bring children despite the absence of dedicated youth facilities.
