Walk off the arrival jetty onto an island that has kept its 1983 shape — shell-curved coral villas, a strip of private sand for most of them, and a house clock two hours ahead of Malé.
5-Star Resort Seaplane 25 min Private Beach Villas
Nika is what the Maldives looked like before the brands arrived: 44 villas hand-built from coral block and palm thatch, an Italian kitchen, a museum inside a 1970s furnace, and beaches cut into private strips. It rewards travellers who want craft and quiet over spectacle — here the reef, not a waterpark, is the entertainment.
Nine room types across 44 units, and the split that matters is which side of the island you land on. South-side Deluxe and Family Deluxe villas sit where the barrier reef comes closest — you swim out from your own sand. North-side Beach and Family Beach villas face a wide lagoon instead. Water Villas and the Faro Studio trade private sand for a deck on the water.

Dining
1 Restaurant & 2 Bars
One kitchen does everything here, which is unusual at this price and very much the point. Marco Polo is a big open-air room with a sand floor, buffets that rotate Maldivian, Asian and Italian through the week, an à-la-carte alternative and a cellar of more than 100 wines. Two bars handle the rest — sunset drinks at Acqua Alta, all-day coffee and a library at the Coffee Shop.
Marco Polo
Italian
The island's only restaurant, and it carries breakfast, lunch and dinner for all 44 villas. Buffets rotate Maldivian, Asian and Italian nights through the week with an à-la-carte menu alongside; the cooking is predominantly Italian and Mediterranean, and the greens come from the resort's own aquaponic garden. The cellar runs to more than 100 wines.
SettingOpen-air · Sand floor
Our tipAsk the chef about a candlelit dinner on your own private beach.
Acqua Alta Bar
Cocktails
The mixology bar, built out over the water for the sunset. Classic and invented cocktails and mocktails, plus a menu of organic detox juices pressed from the resort's own garden produce. It doubles as the island's evening room: cultural nights, dance shows and storytelling sessions are staged here under the Blue Zone programme.
SettingOver the lagoon · Sunset side
Our tipCome early — the bar faces the sunset and the good seats go first.
Coffee Shop
Café
The all-day counter on the west side of the island, sitting behind one of the two public beaches. Espresso and long drinks, wine and beer, and a small library of books and magazines in several languages to take to a lounger. The Faro Studio sits directly above it, which makes this the island's de-facto living room.
SettingWest beach · All day
Our tipBorrow a book from the shelves and take it to the beach next door.
Meal Plans
Dining Inclusions
Four board bases are sold on every villa type: Bed & Breakfast, Half Board, Full Board and All-Inclusive. The figures below were read off the resort's own booking engine for a low-season week — they move with season and villa category, so treat them as a guide rather than a quote.
Each supplement is quoted per adult per night and climbs with the villa category — family villas and the Sultan Suite run to roughly double the beach-villa figure.

Experiences & Activities
Your Days on the Island
Nika's programme is split between the water and the island's own curiosities. The dive centre runs the full PADI ladder onto North Ari's thilas and drift reefs; the excursion board covers whale sharks, mantas, dolphins, sandbanks and the local islands. Ashore there is a museum built inside a coral furnace, a botanical garden, a floating spa and a longevity programme with its own meditation trail.

Family-Friendly Features
Nika takes children but does not entertain them: there is no kids club and no published babysitting rate, so a family day is built out of the water and the island. The three family villas each have two bedrooms and two bathrooms, and the Faro Studio adds a mezzanine with twin beds. The north-shore lagoon is broad and shallow for paddling, the dive centre starts children at eight on a Bubblemaker, and the underground museum's coral tunnels are the island's best rainy-hour trick.

Nika Diving Center · North Ari thilas · Coral planting and monitoring · Catch-and-release fishing
Nika's whole case rests on its reef. The barrier reef rings the island and, unusually for the Maldives, comes right in to the beaches on the south shore — from a Deluxe or Family Deluxe Beach Villa you can swim off your own sand and be on coral in a minute. The north side is different: a broad shallow lagoon you cross to reach the reef, which is why the Beach and Family Beach villas over there suit weaker swimmers and small children better. The resort runs coral planting and monitoring and a catch-and-release fishing policy, and its dive centre puts North Ari's thilas and drift walls within a short boat ride.

Getting There
Transfer from Malé
One 25-minute seaplane hop from Velana International and you are on the island. Nika's seaplane platform is joined to the shore by its own arrival jetty, so unlike most Maldives seaplane islands there is no transfer boat waiting at the end of the flight — you walk in.
Only option
Seaplane
Direct from Malé · ~25 min · Daylight only
~$420 pp roundtrip
Seaplanes fly in daylight only, so late arrivals into Malé overnight in the city and fly out the next morning. We arrange that. Children pay $210 return, and the resort charges the transfer on top of the room rate.

Our Take
Who This Resort is For
Reviewed by Tym Lewtak, founder of LuxAtolls·Updated Oct 04, 2026
Nika is an outlier: a 1983 island that never got flattened and rebuilt, where the architecture is coral block and shell curves rather than glass and infinity edges, and where the luxury on offer is space and quiet rather than facilities. Twenty-seven of the 44 villas own a piece of beach, the reef comes to the sand on one side of the island, and the food is Italian in a way most Maldives resorts only gesture at. What you give up is choice — one restaurant, no villa pools, no kids club — a fair trade only if the island itself is the point.
Ideal for
Couples who want their own beach — the Beach, Deluxe Beach, both Family Beach types and the Sultan Suite each get a private strip of sand with a gazebo and hot tub, screened by vegetation
Snorkellers who hate boats — the barrier reef reaches the south-shore beaches, so Deluxe and Family Deluxe guests swim out from their own sand rather than booking a dhoni
Travellers who collect places with a story — a 1983 original built from coral block and palm thatch, with a museum inside a 1970s coral-block furnace and antiques in the villas
Divers building certifications — the on-island Nika Diving Center runs the full PADI ladder from Bubblemaker at 8 to Divemaster, onto North Ari's thilas and drift reefs
Consider elsewhere if
Anyone who books for the villa pool — no villa here has a private plunge or infinity pool; the beach villas have a garden gazebo with a hot tub, and that is the extent of it
Families who need a kids club — the island publishes no children's programme, no club and no babysitting rate, so days here are yours to fill
Guests who want choice at dinner — one restaurant carries every meal for all 44 villas, so a fortnight is a fortnight of Marco Polo
Late arrivals on a tight schedule — the seaplane flies in daylight only, and there is no standalone transfer tariff to compare, because the resort bundles the seaplane into its direct rates

Frequently Asked Questions
Nika Island Resort & Spa — FAQ
How do you get to Nika Island Resort from Malé?
By seaplane, 25 minutes from Velana International Airport. Nika's seaplane platform is connected to the island by its own arrival jetty, so there is no boat leg at the end. Seaplanes fly in daylight only. The resort's own booking engine charges the return seaplane at about $420 per adult and $210 per child on top of the room rate; we confirm the fare for your dates.
What is Nika Island's house reef like?
The barrier reef rings the island and comes closest on the south shore, where Deluxe and Family Deluxe Beach Villa guests swim out from their own private beach. The north side is a broad shallow lagoon you cross to reach the coral. There is an on-island dive centre, and the resort runs coral planting, monitoring and a catch-and-release fishing policy.
Is Nika Island Resort a 5-star resort?
Google, TripAdvisor and Booking.com all classify Nika as 5-star, and that is what we list. The resort's own site states no rating, and some European tour operators sell it as four-star. In practice it is a 44-villa boutique island: privacy, craftsmanship and reef rather than pools, butlers and multiple restaurants.
Do all the villas at Nika Island have a private beach?
Most, not all. Every Beach, Deluxe Beach, Family Beach, Family Deluxe Beach villa and the Sultan Suite has its own strip of sand with a gazebo, hot tub and outdoor shower, screened by vegetation. The Water Villas, Garden Rooms and Faro Studio do not, and their guests use two public beaches beside the bars instead.
What does a week at Nika Island cost?
The resort's own booking engine put a low-season week for two at roughly $490 a night in a Garden Room, $685 in a Beach or Water Villa and $1,290 in the Sultan Suite on bed and breakfast. On top of that it charges the return seaplane (about $420 per adult) and green tax of $12 per person per night. Board upgrades run about $45 half board, $75 full board and $165 all-inclusive per adult per night on the mainstream villas.
