Direct flights from Melbourne

Maldivian, the Maldives' national carrier, launched a weekly Melbourne–Malé nonstop on 18 May 2026, on an A330 with lie-flat business seats. At launch it left Melbourne late in the evening and landed in Malé around sunrise. The last flight of 2026 leaves Melbourne on 3 November, and the route resumes weekly from 12 January 2027, when it is due to become year-round. It is sold mainly in holiday packages, with some flight-only fares, so don't expect it on an ordinary fare search.

Fares and when to book

As a guide, return economy from the east coast runs about A$900–1,800 depending on the season (Google Flights, September 2026). The Maldives' departure tax is already built into the ticket.

Tips for the journey

  • The nonstop has landed around sunrise, which leaves the whole day for a seaplane. Seaplanes fly in daylight only, so on any routing aim to land by about 15:30 for a same-day seaplane transfer.
  • Smartraveller lowered the UAE and Qatar to 'exercise a high degree of caution' on 8 October 2026, after higher warnings earlier in the year, and still warns that airspace can close at short notice. Check the current advice, and your insurance, before booking a Gulf stopover.
  • SriLankan's fare already routes through Colombo, so a stopover in Sri Lanka on the way is easy to add. Australians have been able to get a free Sri Lankan ETA since May 2026, though you still need to apply.
  • The free IMUGA Traveller Declaration must be submitted in the 96 hours before you land, so on a long itinerary you may need to do it before you leave home.

Every international flight lands at Velana International Airport in Malé. From there it is a speedboat, a seaplane or a domestic flight to your resort — and seaplanes fly in daylight only, so a late arrival can mean a night near the airport. How transfers work →
