Direct flights from Rome
Two airlines fly nonstop from Fiumicino in winter. ITA Airways flies an Airbus A330-900neo from 16 December 2026: three times a week at first, four from 11 January and five from 4 February to 27 March 2027, leaving around 22:15 and landing around 11:25. Neos flies a Boeing 787 once a week, on Saturdays, leaving in the evening and landing at about 09:00–09:40. Both take about 9 hours out; the return takes about an hour longer because of the winds. Schedules change, so check the days with the airline.

As a guide from October 2026, an economy return from Rome to Malé with one stop usually costs €580 to €870, and nonstops from about €920 on ITA Airways, more often €950 to €1,300. August and the Christmas holidays are the dearest times to fly; the cheapest month varies by source, from January to June. These are guide values, not offers: book a few months ahead, and earlier still for Christmas and Easter.
Tips for the journey
- ITA's nonstop lands around 11:25, in time for a same-day seaplane. Seaplanes fly in daylight only, so on any routing aim to land by about 15:30.
- Since 1 April 2026 ITA Airways has been part of Star Alliance and uses Miles & More; the old Volare programme has closed.
- Gulf flights were suspended and cut back during 2026 (Emirates resumed Maldives flights after about four months), and schedules can still change at short notice. Book a connection on a single ticket, or avoid the Gulf hubs with a nonstop or Istanbul.
