Opened 1986 Renovated 2009

Fun Island exists to prove the Maldives doesn’t have to cost a fortune. The house reef is the draw — turtles and blacktips from shore, seasonal mantas within snorkelling distance — and the seven themed dinner buffets keep meals interesting on a longer stay. Rooms are simple, Wi-Fi is slow, and the spa is small. If you can live with that, you’ll struggle to find better value in the atolls.

Experiences & Activities

Your Days on the Island

Fun Island's strongest card is its house reef — turtles, reef sharks, and seasonal manta rays are regularly spotted from shore. On land, the Araamu Spa and a handful of water sports fill the days. This is a quiet island, not an activity-packed mega resort.

House Reef. The house reef is Fun Island's best asset. Shore entry leads to a healthy coral reef where green turtles, blacktip reef sharks, and a variety of reef fish are regularly spotted. Seasonal manta ray sightings between June and November add to the draw. For a 3-star resort, the marine life is genuinely impressive.

House Reef & Underwater

6.2
Good House Reef
Lux Atolls Reef Score · top 40% of Maldives resorts

Shore entry · accessible from beach · gentle slope to reef edge

Green turtles · Reef sharks · Seasonal manta rays · Healthy coral recovery

Fun Island's house reef is a genuine strength for a 3-star resort. Shore entry leads to a healthy reef where green turtles, blacktip reef sharks, and colourful reef fish are reliably present. Manta rays visit seasonally between June and November. The reef was damaged by the 2004 tsunami but has recovered well, and the South Malé Atoll location puts good dive sites within easy boat range.

Our Take

Who This Resort is For

Fun Island earns its place as one of the best value-for-money resorts in the Maldives. The house reef is the headline — turtles, reef sharks, and seasonal mantas from shore entry are rare at this price point. The 2009 post-tsunami rebuild left the rooms clean and functional, the Araamu Spa is a welcome touch, and the South Malé Atoll location means good diving is within easy reach. Set expectations at 3-star, and Fun Island delivers more than it promises.

Ideal for

  • Budget travellers who want a genuine Maldives reef experience without paying luxury prices — rooms start under $180/night
  • Snorkelers and divers — the house reef delivers turtles, reef sharks, and seasonal manta rays that rival resorts costing three times more
  • Couples on a budget seeking a laid-back island escape with decent food and an Araamu Spa for occasional pampering
  • First-time Maldives visitors who want to test the waters without committing to a four-figure-per-night resort

Consider elsewhere if

  • Those expecting luxury finishes — this is a 3-star with simple rooms, basic furnishings, and no private pools
  • Families needing structured kids activities — there is no kids club or dedicated children's programme
  • Guests wanting overwater villas — all rooms are beach-level with no overwater options
  • Foodies — two restaurants and a cafe offer limited dining variety compared to higher-end alternatives

Frequently Asked Questions

Fun Island Resort Maldives — FAQ

Is Fun Island Resort good for snorkeling?
Yes — the house reef is Fun Island's strongest asset. Shore entry leads to a healthy reef where green turtles, blacktip reef sharks, and colourful reef fish are regularly spotted. Manta rays visit seasonally between June and November. For a 3-star resort, the marine life is genuinely impressive.
How long is the transfer to Fun Island Resort?
Forty-five minutes by speedboat from Velana International Airport. No seaplane required and no daylight restrictions. Return transfer costs approximately USD 125 per person roundtrip.
Does Fun Island Resort have overwater villas?
No. All 75 rooms are beach-level — Beach Front Rooms and Deluxe Beach Bungalows. There are no overwater villas or private pools. Rooms are clean and functional after the 2009 post-tsunami rebuild, but finishes are 3-star.
Is Fun Island Resort all-inclusive?
Optional. Four meal plans are available: Bed & Breakfast, Half Board, Full Board, and All-Inclusive. The AI package covers buffet meals at Farivalhu Restaurant and house drinks at both bars. Given the limited a la carte options, most guests find HB or FB sufficient.
Is Fun Island Resort good for families?
Families are welcome but there is no kids club or dedicated children's programme. The shallow lagoon, house reef snorkeling, and water sports keep older children entertained. For families needing structured kids activities, a resort with a dedicated club may be a better fit.
