Walk the long jetty to dinner above the lagoon at Thari, drop onto a reef where nurse, leopard and grey sharks patrol all year, and end the day at the tip of Gangehi's own sandbank.
4-Star Resort Seaplane 25 min Dive Centre on the Beach
For divers and couples who want a small Italian-run island at four-star prices rather than a resort full of facilities. There is no pool, no kids club and no all-inclusive on the resort's own rates; the lagoon, a dive centre with its own 16-metre dhoni and a kitchen that takes pasta seriously do the work. Rooms are simple; book overwater if the view matters.

Choose Your Villa
Five room types and not a pool among them. Club Rooms are compact 34 sqm garden rooms and the cheapest way onto the island; Garden and Beach Villas share a 64 sqm plan, the difference being sand at the door and a sea view. Overwater Villas face the sunset along the jetty, and the 102 sqm Overwater Villa Deluxe is the largest room Gangehi sells.

Dining
2 Restaurants & 1 Bar
Two kitchens and one bar, all with an Italian accent. Veli is the buffet room that carries every meal on both board plans, with an Italian and a Maldivian theme night each week and a pasta corner offering two dishes daily. Thari, out at the end of the jetty, is the à-la-carte alternative for lobster and prawns and is booked ahead. Kandu Bar, beside Veli, is the island's one bar.
Veli Restaurant
Italian
Gangehi's main restaurant faces the beach and the sea and serves buffet-style. Most of the week the cooking is Italian, built around a pasta corner with one dish made fresh and one from the oven or the pan — baked pasta, risotto, gnocchi. Wednesday is the Italian theme night, Friday the Maldivian one, and fresh fish is the main-course constant.
SettingBeachfront · Sea view
Our tipAsk the maître d' for a private fresh-fish and lobster dinner.
Thari Restaurant
Seafood
The à-la-carte room, reached along the jetty and glazed on every side, with an open kitchen and a terrace over the lagoon. Menus are built around lobster and prawns, and it opens by reservation for lunch or dinner — the table to book for a sunset or an occasion rather than an everyday alternative to Veli.
SettingOverwater · End of the jetty
Our tipReserve a terrace table at sunset — it sits right over the lagoon.
Kandu Bar
Cocktails
The island's only bar, next door to Veli with a panoramic view over the sea. Cocktails, beer, wine, spirits and soft drinks through the day — and because neither board plan covers drinks, this is where the bar tab builds. It is the meeting point once the dive boat is back.
SettingBeside Veli · Sea view
Our tipOrder a sundowner here, then wander down to the sandbank for the light.
Meal Plans
Dining Inclusions
Two board bases on the resort's own booking engine: Half Board as standard and Full Board as the one upgrade, both with drinks excluded. There is no all-inclusive rate direct — the soft all-inclusive some Italian operators sell is their own package. Figures were read off the engine for a low-season week; treat them as a guide.
Drinks and Thari are charged on both plans; the Full Board supplement is per adult per night.

Experiences & Activities
Your Days on the Island
Gangehi is built for the water. The dive centre sits on the beach, dives the house reef from shore and takes its 16-metre dhoni to North Ari's best-known thilas; snorkel and fishing trips, canoes and a neighbouring sandbank fill the non-diving days. Ashore the list is short and gentle: the Ginger Spa, morning yoga on the beach, a small gym, beach volleyball and a library.

Family-Friendly Features
Gangehi takes children but builds nothing around them: there is no kids club, no published babysitting rate and no pool, so days revolve around the lagoon, the sandbank and the canoes. Garden, Beach and Overwater Deluxe villas sleep four, the dive centre starts children at eight, and parents in the Overwater Villa Deluxe sign a release form at check-in.

Nurse, leopard and grey sharks year-round · Mantas December–April · North Ari thilas by dhoni
Gangehi's reef is the reason to come. The island sits inside its own ring of coral, and the dive centre dives it straight off the beach — no boat, no schedule. Its own FAQ says nurse, leopard and grey sharks are easy to see year-round, with mantas, whale sharks and turtles most often seen from December to April; a manta cleaning station is mapped on the channel just north of the island. When you want more, the 16-metre dhoni reaches North Ari's thilas — Maaya Thila, Fishhead, Hammerhead Point — on full-day trips. Recent guests describe eagle rays, big stingrays and schools of trevally on the snorkel.

Getting There
Transfer from Malé
A 25-minute TMA seaplane from Velana International: the resort's representative meets you after baggage claim and walks you to the seaplane desk, and the flight lands at Gangehi's own platform off the jetty. The alternative is the resort's fast boat — slower at two to two and a half hours, but it runs later in the day.
Option 1 — Fastest
Seaplane (TMA)
Direct from Malé · ~25 min · Daylight only
~$440 pp roundtrip
Option 2 — Late arrivals
Fast Boat
Malé → Gangehi (2–2.5 hours) · 10:30 & 16:00
~$200 pp roundtrip
Seaplanes fly in daylight only. Landing late? The 16:00 fast boat or a night near the airport solves it — we arrange either.

Our Take
Who This Resort is For
Reviewed by Tym Lewtak, founder of LuxAtolls·Updated Oct 04, 2026
Gangehi is one of North Ari's originals, a small Italian-run island that sells reef, quiet and a good plate of pasta rather than facilities. The terms are plain: no pool, no kids club, no all-inclusive direct, and rooms that are comfortable rather than new. In return you get a proper dive operation on the doorstep, sharks on the reef in every month, a jetty walk to an overwater dinner and four-star prices in an atoll known for its big-fish diving.
Ideal for
Divers watching the budget — an SNSI, PADI and SSI centre on the beach, shore dives onto the house reef, its own 16-metre dhoni and full-day trips to Maaya Thila and Hammerhead Point
Couples who want a quiet small island — fewer than fifty rooms, one bar, low-key evenings and a sandbank that runs out into the lagoon for sunset
Travellers who eat Italian at home — Veli's buffet is built around a daily pasta corner and fresh fish, with an Italian theme night every Wednesday
Snorkellers who want sharks without a long boat ride — the dive centre reports nurse, leopard and grey sharks all year and dives the house reef straight from the beach
Consider elsewhere if
Anyone who books for a pool — there is no swimming pool on the island and no villa has a plunge pool, so the lagoon is the only place to swim
Families who need a kids club — Gangehi publishes no children's club and no babysitting rate, and parents in the Overwater Villa Deluxe sign a release form at check-in
All-inclusive shoppers — the resort's own rates stop at Full Board with drinks excluded, so every drink at Kandu Bar goes on the bill
Travellers after contemporary design — the teak-and-thatch rooms date from the 2008 rebuild, and some recent reviewers call the resort dated

Frequently Asked Questions
Gangehi Island Resort & Spa — FAQ
How do you get to Gangehi Island Resort from Malé airport?
By TMA seaplane, about 25 minutes from Velana International — Gangehi is roughly 84 km west of Malé. The resort's own booking engine prices the return seaplane at about $440 per adult. Seaplanes fly in daylight only; the resort also runs a fast boat at 10:30 and 16:00 that takes two to two and a half hours and costs $100 per person each way.
Is Gangehi Island Resort all-inclusive?
Not on the resort's own rates. Its booking engine sells Half Board as standard and Full Board for about $40 per adult per night more, both with drinks charged separately. Italian tour operators sell the island as a Veraclub with their own soft all-inclusive supplement — that is their package, not something the resort sells direct.
Is Gangehi a 4-star or a 5-star resort?
Four-star. The resort's own booking engine shows four stars with a superior mark, TripAdvisor lists it as a 4-of-5 hotel class and Google Hotels as a 4-star hotel. It is priced accordingly: a low-season Club Room started at about $435 a night on half board when we checked.
What is the difference between a Club Room and a Beach Villa at Gangehi?
Space and sand. The Club Room is a 34 sqm teak-furnished room among the island's greenery with a garden view and a veranda, for two guests. The Beach Villa is 64 sqm with a covered veranda, a sea view and the beach at the door, and the engine lets it sleep four. On the dates we checked the gap was about $50 a night.
Is Gangehi Island good for diving?
Yes — diving is its strongest suit. The on-island centre teaches SNSI, PADI and SSI courses, dives the house reef from the beach and runs a 16-metre dhoni to Maaya Thila, Fishhead and Hammerhead Point on full-day trips. It reports sharks all year and mantas mostly December to April, offers Nitrox at 28–32% and starts children at eight.
