Our Take

Who This Resort is For

Reviewed by Tym Lewtak, founder of LuxAtolls Updated Sep 27, 2026

InterContinental Maamunagau’s unique combination of Club IC benefits for every guest, a manta ray nursery in the lagoon, and proximity to Hanifaru Bay makes it difficult to replicate elsewhere. The all-pool villa portfolio ranges from accessible 100 sqm overwater options to a 1,120 sqm royal residence. Families, couples, and marine life enthusiasts each find a strong proposition here — backed by IHG’s loyalty programme and genuine conservation credentials through the Manta Trust.

Ideal for

Manta enthusiasts — the lagoon nursery for juvenile reef mantas and 35-minute access to Hanifaru Bay (UNESCO) make this one of the best-positioned resorts for manta encounters
Families wanting luxury credentials — Travel + Leisure’s Best Family Resort in the Maldives (2025), with Planet Trekkers, and three dedicated family villa types
Couples and honeymooners seeking tranquillity — 81 villas, all with pools, and an adults-only Retreat lounge limited to 18 guests
IHG loyalty members — Club InterContinental benefits for every guest, IHG One Rewards points, and the brand’s only all-Club resort worldwide

Consider elsewhere if

Budget travellers — high-end villa pricing plus ~$760 pp seaplane transfers means a significant total outlay
Those wanting a large, lively resort — 81 villas and a tranquil atmosphere mean limited nightlife and a quieter social scene
Guests who need late-arrival flexibility — seaplane is daylight-only; the domestic flight + speedboat alternative adds complexity
