Our Take

Who This Resort is For

Reviewed by Tym Lewtak, founder of LuxAtolls Updated Sep 27, 2026

Waldorf Astoria Maldives occupies a distinct position: it combines the culinary ambition of a city hotel — Zuma, Dave Pynt, treetop tasting menus — with the natural assets of a Maldivian island resort. The three-island layout prevents the crowding that plagues single-island competitors, and the Aqua Wellness Centre remains unmatched. Forbes Five-Star and back-to-back WTA wins confirm the consistency. It is expensive, but the breadth of what’s included justifies the positioning.

Ideal for

Ultra-luxury couples and honeymooners wanting culinary depth — eight restaurants including Zuma and Terra’s treetop pods are genuinely world-class
Families who want space — 599–1,113 sqm multi-bedroom villas, a dedicated water park, and The Stars Club deliver at the highest level
Wellness-focused guests — the Aqua Wellness Centre’s hydrotherapy facility is the first and still the finest in the Maldives
Guests who want variety without island-hopping — three interconnected islands plus a private island create distinct zones for dining, wellness, and recreation

Consider elsewhere if

Budget-conscious travellers — with villas from $1,500/night and $960 yacht transfers, this is firmly ultra-luxury
Guests who want a small, intimate resort — 119 villas across three islands is a large-scale operation
Those prioritising quick airport access — the 35-minute yacht is smooth but not the 10-minute speedboat of North Malé options
