Choosing a Maldives Resort
How do I choose the right Maldives resort?
Start with your priorities — budget, reef quality, seclusion, or dining variety — then narrow by atoll and transfer type. Each of our resort profiles breaks down villa categories, meal plans, reef ratings, and guest sentiment so you can compare side by side. Our planning guide walks through the full decision process.
What's the difference between a 4-star and 5-star Maldives resort?
Five-star resorts typically offer larger villas (150+ sqm), private pools, multiple speciality restaurants, and premium transfers. Four-star properties deliver excellent value with slightly smaller villas and fewer dining options — but often match on reef quality. See our budget breakdown for pricing across tiers.
Do all Maldives resorts have good snorkeling?
No — house reef quality varies enormously. Some resorts sit on barren sand, while others have world-class coral gardens steps from the beach. We rate every resort's reef independently on access, coral coverage, and marine life diversity. Our snorkeling guide ranks the best house reefs.
How much does a Maldives resort cost per night?
Entry-level four-star resorts start around $165/night, while ultra-luxury properties exceed $2,000/night. Transfers, meal plans, and excursions add 20–40% on top of the room rate. Our full cost guide covers every line item with real data from 68 resorts.
Should I choose a seaplane or speedboat transfer?
Speedboat resorts (North & South Malé Atoll) are cheaper and more flexible — you can arrive any time. Seaplane resorts (Baa, Ari, Noonu, etc.) tend to be more secluded and exclusive, but transfers cost $400–$900 per person return and only operate in daylight. Our planning guide covers the trade-offs.
What's included in a Maldives resort package?
Standard packages include accommodation and your selected meal plan (bed & breakfast through all-inclusive). Transfers, excursions, spa, and premium drinks are usually extra. Each resort profile on LuxAtolls breaks down exactly what each meal plan tier includes so there are no surprises.
